Most hyped boxer of all time

Recent - maybe Jeff Lacy.
Not to say he wasn't an extremely dangerous fighter, but by the time he faced Calzaghe most fans/critics were saying Lacy was a sure in to unify the division & pretty much destroy anyone in his path.
He went in a solid favourite against the longest running champ in the sport at the time & was thrashed.


All time - maybe Tyson.
The unbeatable destroyer - any flaws in his game were ignored & the hype beyond belief.

I hope when you say he isn’t one of the top ten fighters in britain you mean achievement-wise within the proffesional ranks. When you talk about natural ability, speed; both defensively and when he’s on the attack, footwork and accuracy Kahn is easily one of the best we’ve got. I don’t see how you can watch him fight compared to the bulk of british fighters and not tell there is a distinct difference.

Don’t get me wrong, not for one second do I think it’s a good thing to over-hype someone, especially when as of yet they’ve not achieved anything (at least not as a pro). Like you’ve said we saw what it did to Audley but there’s two reasons why that shouldn’t mean anything, one; I think a good amatuer record means more going into the lower weight divisions and two; everyone’s different, you’ve got to give the kid a chance.

There is such a negative attitude towards british boxers, namely from british boxing fans and it’s such a shame. It must stem from how much better American fighters have been in the past but I think we’re really beginning to bridge the gap. We have some superb fighters now, infact I’d go as far to say never before have we had so many talented boxers at one time; Calzaghe, Hatton, Haye, Woods, Mitchell and Kahn to name a few. That’s just going on ability too not results.

It’s an exciting time to be a british boxing fan and although it’s sensible to not buy into the hype too much on the other side of the coin enjoy it. I just think sometimes people are too negative, look at what some of our boxers can do in the ring, with the right attitude it’s wrong to believe they’re not capable going very far.

I agree almost entirely with everything you say, especially when saying that it is a good time to be a British boxing fan - and could add a few names to your list of sucessful and up and coming exciting Brit fighters (perhaps alex arthur or john thaxton.... jr witter?).

However... i do disagree with your point about khan being one of top ten in Britain right now and being naturally fantastic. p4p against all the names we both have put together right now he is not amongst them. Naturally he's not the greatest boxer - his skills have been honed as he has always recieved some of the best training possible following his hype drive from the Olympics. Left to his own devices Khan would have never achieved his current status.

I'm just not a fan of his - his fights are boring because his opponents are just fodder to pad out his career...and i hope he knows this too. AND YES! i know you are going to say "there are few top pro-fighters without padded records!!" but - it doesn't mean i have to like it.

There are things i like about Khan... such as the fact he is a good role model to kids and to the sport... AND more importantly in the political climate as a young and proud British ******. But i'm just not a fan. I can't help it, i just always want his underdog opponent to put khan on his arse.
