It's not so much the American heavyweights are weak, it's that the Eurasian heavyweights are strong. It's no disgrace to lose to Alexander Povetkin, who had one of the best amateur records in the history of boxing.

This was a very good win for the up-and-coming undefeated hw "contender" Povetkin. Not only did he outbox a decent opponent in Donald, he showed that he could fight a solid 10 rounds. As for his next opponent, I would favor someone like a Tye Fields, Timor Ibragimov, Dom Guinn, or even Chris Aerrola.

However, I'm alittle skeptical about Sauerland's assertion that he'll be ready for a title shot in the near future. I think a bout with a solid top 10 or 15 opponent is too soon at this stage in his career. I don't understand what's the rush with this kid? Does Sauerland need to cash in so quick?

Povetkin's problem is that he is not nearly the puncher people make him out to be. His stamina also seemed a bit shaky since he got tired against fighter who barely fought back, but when he threw straight punches he actually landed them on Povetkin rather freely.

This is the impression that russian boxing community got.

To his credit, he's still a young and relatively inexperienced hw fighter. This was a good "stepping stone" win for him and hopefully he will be better for it. However, like I said earlier, I don't know why his handlers are trying to rush him into getting a title shot so soon. I think he should get at least 20 wins under his belt before putting him in with one of the titlists...

I always thought his biggest problem was his defense. I think Wlad, Vitali, possibly Brewster would knock him out, unless he has a granite chin and cannot be knocked out at all.

I like the names you're picking. In the other thread people were saying Rahman or Ruiz, which could turn out to be a mistake. Guinn or Timor would be good; he should probably beat up on one of the English heavies to tap into that market, and maybe before long he'll get an ESPN fight if a younger American HW is up for the risk.

Ruiz is a tough fight for anyone, and who knows what to expect out of Rahman. At this point in his career why rush things and risk getting KTFO? As was pointed out earlier, this guy has some significant flaws in his game and will need to work them out before he gets in with some top opponents. Guy's only 13-0, so what the ****in rush? It really sounds like Sauerland is trying to 'cash in' as soon as he can with Povetkin....

Dominic Guinn and Ty Fields would prove nothing, but I agree with Cristobal Arreola and even better, Eddie Chambers as suitable opponents. People wouldn't be able to use the "Chambers is small" excuse when Chambers loses, since he and Povetkin are about the same size. Byrd, TOS, Scott, Minto, Barrett, Witherspoon, and Akinwande would be good opponents.

Brock, Haye, and Virchis would be too risky this soon.

Fighting Timor or Guinn wouldn't do him any good, Donald is a better fighter than those two and look what happened today. Povetkin would KO Rahman easily, he doesn't have Donald's chin. Maskaev beat Rahman twice, and Povetkin > Maskaev. Ruiz would be a tough fight, and like Donald, give some good professional ring experience to Sasha. Remember, Donald and Ruiz are about equal, judging from what happened in their fights with other boxers such as Valuev.
