Kelly Pavlik - The Next Big Hype?

That's the thing, I think that if Taylor would fight him the way he fought winky(not a stellar performance by any means) he would just get backed down and beat up with all these straight punches. Against a guy like Pavlik, a durable workhorse type, it is dumb to box him the way he likes people to box him.. Pavlik, imo, is very prone to getting outboxed and if Taylor could pick his spots throw a one-two and move he can do it. He is durable enough to do that. Maybe even up the pressure in the later rounds a la Wlad but I am not sure if he is capable of it. The key to beating pavlik is picking angles and workrate. Stick that jab in his face and don't let him find balance.

Pavliks not gonna just be standing there. HIs offense is his defense. Taylor CAN NOT win this fight by throwing just cominations. His jab has to be deadly.

On his best night, Taylors jab is very good at best. But its not a WInky Jab, thats gonna keep a all out pressure fighter like Pavlik at bay all night.

Ive watched 6 or 7 pavlik fights recently, and Pavlik has all the tools to win this fight.

TAYLOR is just as ovverated as Pavlik is, and Pavlik isnt that overrated.

Hear me out here. When i look back the careers of overhyped fighters like a Jeff Lacy, u notice things. Like i just wached PEMPERTON-LACY, and even thought Lacy dominated the fight, you could clearly tell that if someone with some boxing talent got in the ring with Lacy, it wouldnt last long. At the time we were all to high on him to realize it, but now we all ask ourselves how we DIDNT see it.

Not the case with Pavlik. He's been in with guys like Taylor, but far less talented, and he manhandled the technique and, as seems to always be the case with Pavlik, he scored the knockout.

Taylor may be able to keep Pavlik off for a couple of rounds, but eventually Pavlik will reach him. Pavlik has a good jab of his own and is a great combination puncher. We've never seen Taylor in a fight where his opponent has to no fear of getting hit, and throws back even.

Ive looked at it every way, and i hope they make Pavlik the underdog cause i really think he wins this fight. not easily though

It's funny because perception influences things.

All I've seen from Pavlik is a sloppy, unskilled pub fighter who leads with his chin and has zero defense whatsoever. He's never on balance, and fumbles around thowing arm punches he can get away with because he's so god damn huge for that weight class.

That raises another point, it becomes a smoke and mirrors issue because when he steps up against a big strong man like Taylor he's not going to be able to get away with throwing nonstop plodding straight punches because Taylor has more reach and is much more athletic.

No, going on the inside is the common misconception about fighters like Pavlik, it is good against pure boxers, but Pavlik fights his best on the middle distance(as was shown against miranda), even better so than on outside.
So, unless you are a proven better slugger then Pavlik, roughin him up is not a good idea, and I understand your point about the inside/close distance, but Taylor will be punished going in there.

Pavlik has looked impressive against more than just Zertuche and Miranda. Basically, the truth is everyone can be beat. marciano and Ottke the only champs to retire undefeated were given a gift decision or 8 (as in Ottke's case). Pavlik will lose, but its his style, strength, humbleness, and articulation that gives fans reason to love him. Oh, the amatuer background, better defense than this writer gave him for defense, and power make him a legit contender. I am ddefinitely not saying he will pummel Taylor, hell Taylor is a better fighter than what we have seen of alte. Its DiBella who has put Taylor in with the worst opponents, the blame is as much DiBella's as it is Taylor's. Pavlik will force Taylor to fight, and with that we will see the caliber of champion Jermain Taylor is. Give Pavlik some credit, he deserves it. Don't be shocked if this kid becomes a multi-division champ before its said and done

Agreed. Muchless, who can argue when an exciting fighter comes along to help out the sport of boxing? Regardless of their technical skill or P4P rankings. Sometimes I wish P4P was shot. We ranking most boring fighters in most cases. Dun tell me Winky and Floyd ain't boring or Bhop when he was at the top. They are the reason people talk bad about boxing.

I said that Taylor is not an inside fighter by any means(nor does manny teach his fighters to fight on inside much) and getting on the inside of Pavlik is gonna cost taylor a lot. And who gave you the idea that pavlik's hooks are plodding, he throws rather short punches, albeit they look awkward due to the length of his hands.
