Will Hopkins and Wright Make A Noise?

by TK Stewart - LAS VEGAS - You know the age-old question don't you? If a tree falls in the forest and nobody is there to hear it, does it make a noise?

This same question can be applied to this summer's match between Bernard Hopkins and Winky Wright.

While Golden Boy Promotions and HBO are still delirious over the record setting success of last week's Floyd Mayweather, Jr. versus Oscar De La Hoya blockbuster, they kick-off this week with the press tour for the July 21st contest between Bernard Hopkins and Winky Wright. Notice I call it a contest and not a fight?

Unfortunately, Richard Schaefer, Mark Taffett of HBO pay-per-view and the Mandalay Bay hotel and casino have a tough sell on their hands.

The initial press conference for this fight actually took place last weekend in Las Vegas on the morning of the Mayweather versus De La Hoya fight. It was scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. and boxing scribes were told to show up at the 740-seat Hollywood Theatre inside the MGM Grand hotel and casino. I showed up there at the anointed hour, and while the press conference was tedious and monotonous, I'll say this for Golden Boy Promotions and Richard Schaefer - they do put on a helluva spread. I helped myself to several pieces of fresh fruit, a delectable serving of scrambled eggs, home fries and a cold glass of orange juice. [details]

half the article is rediculously false.

Hopkins sold probably more of the seats for his fight with Tarver, cause he DOES have a very loyal fanbase.

People love to watch the best and there was a time when Hopkins was one of the VERY best. still is.

And WRIGHT-TAYLOR was infront of 12,000+ people. not a huge a crowd, but not an empty arena like the author laughably stated.

And what about WRIGHT-QUARTEY? 10,000 seats for that fight as well, and Quartey certainly didnt do the selling

winky does have absolutly NO CLUE how to sell a fight though.
alot of the article was annoying, because if you cant appreciate wright v hopkins then you really shouldnt consider yourself a boxing fan.

i agree, but selling a fight with aguing just isnt winky. He'd have to act and that would be embarrasing

And part of his whole character, is the fact that he's humble and nice and down to earth, but he'll dominate you in the ring

When was the last time Wright was in a close fight, excluding Jermain Taylor??? (which wright won )

This is a fight for LEGACY, who cares about titles. They are meaningless nowadays. A win will go a long way for both guys's careers

And who knows, Maybe one guy will come out like he's got something to prove, and try to win by WIIIIIIDE UD. It could be a rough fight if that happens, but it would still be ugly.

I hope they box, cause if i buy that fight im gonna want to watch skill in the ring, a brawl between these guys would be UGLY

Oh and a side note, How can Hopkins possibly win without throwing a lot of punches???

I dont get how anybody could do it...

Exactly why it is an interesting fight.....Hops will have to attack or lose......if you ask me he will lose either way.Winky controls every fight he is in when he wants to.He mixed it up with Taylor and Quartey but when need be he can go into that shell and simply dominate a lazy opponent.
