Turning down Cintron shows how shrewd White is. With Folyd, if Sherk won he beat the best pound-for-pound boxer. If Sherk lost, he lost to the best pound-for-pound boxer. Now with Cintron, if Sherk wins Cintron is not near as famous as Floyd and if Sherk loses he loses to a not so famous boxer.
I do think White should man up though and accept Cintron's challenge. He can't expect to just pick and choose the boxer HE WANTS to fight Sherk. Also, Floyd is alot better matchup for Sherk than Cintron is, although I would bet on Sherk in both fights. Cintron has a better chance, but IMO he is still the underdog.
This would be a huge opportunity for both boxing and mma to tap into each others fanbase and get people to crossover on both sides and appreciate what each has to offer.
First of all, everybody's got a chance. Where ever you train, no matter your record is, you always have the puncher's chance. Especially around this year with the word around the MMA community is "Upset". Kermit pretty much has a chance.
Secondly, if Kermit is serious about this and the "i"s are dotted and the "t"s crossed, he really needs to hook up with a really good school to train with. He's going up against a wrestling pedigree and no amount of high school wrestling isn't going to make up for it. We're talking about a guy whose so great on the ground, he almost retired because nobody wanted to face him. Sherk was ready to get into the flooring business before the UFC picked him up. Also keep in mind that even if Kermit can hang with Sherk, he still has to deal with his gas tank. It's my understanding that the standard boxing round is 3 mins. A MMA round is usually 5 mins. Kermit will have to really work on his cardio to stay around. If Kermit can at least hang with Sherk for one round, he's already proven that he can take on the best. The rest of the rounds would be for the win. In order to do that he really needs to work on his wrestling, his cardio and submission defense.
Much respect to Kermit for stepping up. Let's hope this match get's made.
We all know Cintron accepted the White's challenge to Mayweather to go against the best UFC has to offer. It seems to me that Cintron has his eyes on the 2 mil paycheck and hasn't been thinking about the rest. Lets assume he has the ability to give Sherk both a boxing lesson and a wrestling lesson, does that mean he will do it? Cintron had his opportunity to exploit the defects in Margarito's style, yet failed miserably. Why should anybody believe that he has suddenly gained the strength of character to prevail over a well experienced streetfighter in his own backyard? Cintron obviously has more talent than Sherk, but does he have the inner strength a man needs to handle a totally different situation? I'm not so sure.
Cintron has a background in MMA anyways so he has an advantage there already, i hope the fight happens, it would give us a clue as to how well a pro boxer could do in MMA,
If he won i think you would boxers crossing over to fight MMA guys also.
The thing with Cintron is that he is a wrestling state champion. There is a difference between a guy who learns the mechanics of a thing and someone who trains at something from an early age. Its like comparing Rahman to Lewis. You can see the smoothness and fluidity of Lewis while Rahman looks as if he is counting in his head (1, 1, 1-2, 1).
A big puncher will probably do better in MMA than a slick boxer with limited power. That and the fact that Cintron's wrestling will help Cintron avoid getting taken down makes him probably the best choice at the lower weights.
