He was a good fighter and I feel bad that he died. But seriously what has he done that qualifies him for the Hall Of Fame.
Petition for Diego Corrales to join the IBHOF

The point is, other dead fighters have to wait thier turn. Five years isn't a massive length of time to wait to get elected to the IBHOF. People want Corrales to get inducted now because of his death. Most wouldn't really pick Chico as a first ballot HOFer anyway, though he will probably be elected eventually.I think the purpose of the petition is NOT to elect Chico because of his death, but to WAIVE the normal wait period for his induction. I think this is where some of the confusion lies. I dont think we should all start bickering and cursing each other out over this matter (God know we have plenty of other topics to do that in!), but to all who share the same opinion (of waiving the waiting period for induction, as most of us feel he's a worthy candidate for the hall anyway) and sign the petition if we believe so.
The rules of the IBHOF have to be respected and cannot be waived due to emotion. It's sad he is dead but he'll have to wait. Those are the rules.Comment

I've avoided posting on all of the Chico threads.... but this quote pretty much sums up my feelings. The point is, other dead fighters have to wait thier turn. I understand what you're saying and actually agree with you. I feel he is a HOFer, maybe not a first ballot HOFer. However, what we are asking is to WAIVE the normal 5 year period and consider him eligible NOW. Doesnt mean he'll get elected; just mean, they will make a decision now if he should be inducted or not. It's been done in other sports before, and yes, there are other fighters who have died before their time and might be considered HOF material, the times are different now. There is no denying that. With media coverage and televised fights, people endear themselves to fighters more so now than they probably did during Paret or Moore's time. The point is, other dead fighters have to wait thier turn. Again, we're (or maybe it is just I) are not saying 'forget the 5 year wait period and vote him in!' What we mean is, 'forget the 5 year eligibility period and make him QUALIFIED for eligibility now.'Comment

To make him, or ANY fighter who's life is cut off suddenly from the ring, immediately eligible for consideration for the Hall is no sin. In fact, it is a way of honoring a perhaps deserving fighter and preserving the legacy for his family and fans.
Maybe that's what we should petition the Hall for...to alter their rules a bit, not for Chico, but for any other fighter that, God forbid, loses his life tragically in or out of the ring.Comment
