Did'nt see the fight but respect derrangeds opinion and Sopranos too.....and I know this thread was not implying he was robbed just asking if anyone thought he was. From what I read about the fight 117-111 sounds a bit wide but it appears most agree Chagaev won just closer than that score indicates.Valuev has had his fair share of favorable decisions already so I do not feel sorry for him in the least.
Was Valuev Robbed?

Wow, I'm very surprised at so many people agreeing that Valuev wasn't robbed. Albeit I watched the fight on an internet stream (thank you so much whoever it was on this forum for pointing it out!). So the video at times was a little jerky. Maybe Chagaev was lightening fast and I just missed his punches.
According to my scorecard he won 3 rounds. As I wrote in my round by round, he was 2, 3 or 10 weight divisions too small to be competitive in this fight. Was my stream that bad where I barely saw Chagaev land any punches at all in at least 6-7 of the rounds? Then just far fewer in 2-3 of them? Wasn't Chagaev hurt in the final seconds of the bout?
I actually thought it was amusing that Chagaev was trying to attack for much of the 12th round. As if he had a realistic chance of knocking Valuev out or winning. What was interesting to me was Don King at the end of the fight. Right after they finished and well before the scores were tallied, Don King said, "that was a GOOD fight, well deserved." And then he stopped himself short. I felt he knew the outcome already and was trying to pretend it wasn't a robbery. It was actually that statement, not the blatantly fake theatrics by Chagaev, that caused me to think we might be in for a robbery here.
But so many people don't think this was a robbery. So it was either the internet stream quality or my eyes that probably failed me. Maybe both...Comment

It never ceases to surprise me when very close fights are declared as robberies. Remember that if you have, say, 7 close rounds, then you could concievably have a large gulf in the scoring without it having any bearing on how close the fight was. One of the problems with boxing scoring is that it doesn't matter if you win a close round with a closing flurry or dominate it clearly (but not clearly enough for a 10-8), you still get the same points. It did look like Chagaev couldn't hurt Nikolai but at the same time Valuev didn't hurt Chagaev, so the rounds came down to whose aggression was the more effective, whose punches were cleaner and who had the better defense and ring generalship. I think that Chagaev boxed more effectively through large areas of the fight, but the very fact that Valuev was never particularly in trouble in any round does make the result more contentious.Comment

yes squealpiggy I agree that having 7 close rounds could lead to large variances in scoring. But to me I didn't see 7 close rounds. I saw maybe 5, 2 I gave to valuev and 3 to chagaev. The rest were clearly Valuev's. Even 5 close rounds were stretching it. I thought it was very easy to score, I was never thinking too much after a round about who to give it to.
Wasn't Chagaev the one in trouble by the end of the fight? To me it seemed just that Chagaev was out of his league. Not in talent sense, but he was just fighting someone way too big.Comment

I wouldn't say the guy punching his heart out at the end was in trouble and immediately raising his hands in the air after the bell.yes squealpiggy I agree that having 7 close rounds could lead to large variances in scoring. Did you actually watch the fight?
From the cheers of the crowd it seems obvious who was more exciting and who fought better. Regardless, Valuev looked slow, Vunerable, and though he was never in trouble he was clearly outboxed. Which considering Chagaev had to work harder to box better because of the size difference means Valuev got outboxed even more.
What I saw was Valuev standing around a whole bunch never throwing anything. Towards the end he did, but on punch volume alone he looked lazy and slow.Comment

again, i had it 115-113 chagaev and to me the fight was fairly easy to score, there were some close rounds but based on the fairly low work rate of either guy it was easy to tell who did more. Generally the rounds in which Valuev managed to keep Chagaev outside he prevailed, and the rounds in which Chagaev countered effectively and got inside he did better. I had it tied after ten, and i thought Chagaev took the last two rounds. The 12th round may have seemed like Valuevs because he was very aggressive, but what i saw was him simply bulling in and eating counter shots.Comment

I saw it on the stream too. From my point of view it seemed like Chagaev was landing the best punches. Valuev is so big that it's almost hard to see Chagaev. Chagaev to me was more aggressive and had better ring generalship. Valuev seem to stalk Chagaev the whole fight and seem to just use his jab unless he got him in the corner and he let go a little more. It was close, but IMO it was the right decision.Wow, I'm very surprised at so many people agreeing that Valuev wasn't robbed. I thought it was close and could have gone either way, but I'm glad that Valuev didn't break Rockys record (whew! that would've made me wish Holmes had). I do think Chagaev was landing better and was the more excitin fighter. If Chagaev could really punch, he may have gotten Valuev out of there. I mean maybe Valuev just has a McCall-like chin, but White tyson looked more like White-Byrd despite his 22w/17ko's. And for everyone who watched online, I hope you also caught it on FSN. I almost didn't.Comment
