Heavyweight boxing is actually GREAT! I think there's more talented heavyweights than ever before, and LOTS of great fights coming up, such as Valuev/Chagaev, Briggs/Ibragimov, Wlad/Brewster, Maskaev/Peter, Vitali/TBA and so on.
And it's going to get even better when prospects like Alexander Povetkin, JD Chapman, Denis Boytsov, Roman Greenberg, Eddie Chambers and others become contenders.

      1. Wladimir Klitschko

      3. Nicolay Valuev
      4. Shannon Briggs
      5. Ruslan Chagaev
      6. Oleg Maskaev

      8. Lamon Brewster
      9. Sultan Ibragimov
      10.Tony Thompson
i dont mean to bust up your list but if you leave vitali out for that reason you also have to leave out brewster.... injured and coming off a world class ass whooping at the hands of sergei

Okay, that's fair enough. So how about these:

        1. Wladimir Klitschko
        2. Samuel Peter
        3. Nicolay Valuev
        4. Shannon Briggs
        5. Ruslan Chagaev
        6. Oleg Maskaev
        7. Chris Byrd
        8. Sultan Ibragimov
        9. Tony Thompson
        10.Calvin Brock

I still think Calvin Brock's a contender - his losing to Wlad doesn't mean he's not better than a lot of people.

To call heavyweight "great" is a little much. What it is, is okay. Briggs and Ibragimov are both only okay. Brewster is okay. Maskaev is okay at best. Vitali hasn't fought in two years. Valuev is a joke.

          Great is welterweight.

i agree, i like thompson also, he does enough to win, not exciting, but he would give anyone a tough time.

i think brock and thompson would both beat briggs but briggs should be rated higher since hes the champ

                  Great is welterweight.
I agree welterweight is a great division right now, with Floyd Mayweather and the other talented fighters.

But in heavyweight we have boxers who've won gold medals in international amateur heavyweight tournaments (Chagaev, Povetkin, Wlad) including the gold medals in the Summer Olympics (Povetkin in 2004, Wlad in 1996). People have often said Felix Savon was a great boxer, but Ruslan Chagaev defeated him twice! Having 43 knockouts by age 31 is getting close to great (Wlad) as is having 34 KO's in 35 fights and never being knocked down (Vitali). The heavyweight division is becoming more interesting, and it will be even better in the months to come when Povetkin and some others become contenders.

I think Brock would defeat Briggs but I just can't see why everybody likes Thompson. I saw him against Ibragimov and he didn't look anything special at all. He doesn't do much in the ring and the only reason he won against Ibragimov was because Ibragimov just plain sucks. I think Briggs would have a pretty good chance against Thompson, as well as any other boxer with a pulse and a semi-decent speed.

Chagaev doesn't speak much about his defeats of Savon but it does show some skill. Does anybody know how old Savon was at the time though?

Never mind, I just looked and Savon was 30 at the time. Savon later avenged this loss by dominating Chagaev and winning over him a few years later. Still, defeating Savon shows some skills to be reckoned with. That said, Chagaev has some problems in stamina department and I think Valuev will TKO him in 10-11 round.
