I'll second that. Azumah is another one of my very favorite fighters ever. Couldn't you just tell he was gonna be a special fighter after that performance against Sal? Here's this rather green, unknown African fighter, facing an already bonafide great fighter, and he takes him to the brink without ever giving up. That last round was very memorable. Sal is putting on this great performance and he finally gets Zoom in really bad trouble, but up springs Nelson like, "COME ON MOTHER****ER!"...just wanting another piece of him. Of course Sanchez then finished him.

I've always thought that Azumah would have beaten Sal in a rematch if not for Sals tragic death. Nelson was always better in rematches anyway...

It certainly would have been another great fight, of that I have no doubt. I only watched the Sanchez-Nelson fight for the first time two years ago, and although I was aware of Nelson's achievements a little later in his career, I had no idea of how much of an unfancied underdog he was at the time of this fight. And what a superb performance.

How much is there to admire about that period of lower weight fighting? Sanchez, Nelson, Gomez, Zarate, Arguello, Chavez- each and every one a cast-iron, all-time great. I've always loved the ferocity of the featherweight division more than any other, the speed and power and everything else.

Nah. Ten years ago he was past his peak, getting disqualified against Hoyfield. He's done nothing since!
