The great Wilfredo "Bazooka" Gomez. He was a machine at 122. Both guys were very complete fighters at super bantam, but Gomez had the longer, more decorated career. Just the fact that he stopped every opponent he faced in his title defenses is impressive. 14/15/16/17 defenses or whatever of that WBC world championship fighting guys like Zarate, Pintor and Kid Meza...

Had Morales been able to control his weight he may have had a shot at being the best there ever was at 122. I have posted his accomplishments there before...they are pretty great.

    -36 wins, 0 losses, 28KOs

-Wins over Barrera, Jones, Sanchez, McCullough, Zaragoza, McCullough

-9 defenses of the WBC world title, unified the WBO against Barrera...

Both guys were awesome fighters there, but Gomez gets my nod as being the greatest.

Yeah, Gomez was ****in' sweet. The knockout power at the weight was frightening wasn't it- just a shame he couldn't quite transfer it to Featherweight, a bit like Morales. But his fight with Sanchez was a belter. A real swarmer, brilliant to watch.

      Good assessment in my opinion.

Yep...both guys lost a little of that devastating power when they moved up. It's not really a knock on Gomez though...he faced just about two of the best little men at 126 in his ambition. You won't find many feathers (and eventually super feather in Zooms case) better than Zoom Zoom Nelson and Sal Sanchez.

Morales' right hand was pure destruction at 122. That solar plexus shot he crippled Zaragoza with was a thing of beauty. The Chacon knockout was brutal as well...that little right half uppercut roasted him.

I made a highlight of Erik (he's one of my very favorite fighters of all time). Check it out!

Yeah man, he is my favourite. Cool clip.

Gomez did pretty well against Sanchez and Nelson, but just didn't quite have it, did he. They're both all-time greats, as you say. The bout between Sanchez and Nelson is one of my all-time favourites too, a ****in' awesome fight.

                    Hop

I'll second that. Azumah is another one of my very favorite fighters ever. Couldn't you just tell he was gonna be a special fighter after that performance against Sal? Here's this rather green, unknown African fighter, facing an already bonafide great fighter, and he takes him to the brink without ever giving up. That last round was very memorable. Sal is putting on this great performance and he finally gets Zoom in really bad trouble, but up springs Nelson like, "COME ON MOTHER****ER!"...just wanting another piece of him. Of course Sanchez then finished him.

I've always thought that Azumah would have beaten Sal in a rematch if not for Sals tragic death. Nelson was always better in rematches anyway...
