Hitting on the side of the neck is legal. Hitting on the back of the head or neck is illegal, but it it is because the opponent's head is too low you will never get penalised for it.

Stoppage was a little premature, but let's be a little fair to the referee here, he must be aware of the massive gulf in class between Manfredo and Calzaghe and was probably looking for an opportunity to stop the fight before Manfredo got seriously hurt. The referee is responsible for the safety of the fighters, and let's be honest he was sitting on the ropes being hit at will. I don't see how a premature stoppage can have any reflection on the fighter either.

As for this crap about "English referees stop fights too soon", there are plenty of examples of premature stoppages everywhere in the world, and plenty of examples of fights which were allowed to continue in Britain when they should have been stopped.

Finally, what is this business of comparing Manfredo to Ali? Are you even thinking?

I visit many boxing forums and on the whole most fans are fair and knowledgable but Elitesoldier is possibly the biggest clown that I have ever encountered. His posts are embarassing and juvenile and he obviously has no idea what the hell he is talking about.

Anyway, I think the fight was stopped too early but I suppose a damn good beating was inevitable. I like Manfredo, he is an honest fighter and a decent bloke but was woefully outclassed in this contest. But then again, maybe Calzaghe might have run out of steam by the fourth! (According to the idiot that is Elite Soldier).

Those punches had no power behind it to give a man a comma or to give them brain damage. Peter was talking fine after the fight with no bruise on his face what so ever. **** wales
The Calzaghe - Manfredo fight was a mis-match, and saying Manfredo deserves a rematch is ridiculous. The guy isn't in the same league as Calzaghe. Yes, it was poor refereeing, but Calzaghe would have only went on to beat Manfredo (and possibly do some serious damage) had the fight not been stopped in round 3.

                  Ive said this before but

manfredo was outclassed. Calaghes hand speed was blinding. He was just to fast for manfredo and manfredo was confused he didnt know what to do. He just couldnt handle calzaghes speed. So he just coverd up layed on the ropes and bobbed around randomly. He wasnt hurt and it didnt need to be stopped at that time. But i dont think manfredo woulda gotten anything done at all if it had gone on. But we will never know.

You know why I can't complain over the stoppage? Maybe it was a tad early but Peter Manfredo Jr. is in the biggest fight of his career. Possibly the biggest fight he will ever get. He has a chance to become super middlweight champion - in front of a massive crowd - and he covers up like a three year old playing 'peek-a-boo'. I mean, seriously, he said he was leaning against the ropes, moving and blocking against Joe's amateurish shots. Moving? What? Blocking? Sure, a bunch hit gloves- but Manfredo blocked more than a few with his face, too. My roommate walked into the room and saw this, saw that it was round three and sighed, "Don't tell me it's going to get stopped already...". This coming from a guy who barely watches boxing other than when I can make him sit down for a fight yet even he called it. You can't be in a massive fight and just decide to get hit for 30 seconds without answering back. At all.

My only regret is that the referee didn't let Joe Calzaghe put that journeymen on his ass.
