dr filth - yeah, he was respectfull to white people. he was way, way, way ahead of the times. he believed that everybody should be treated with the same respect, white, black, or otherwise.

when he opened his club, cafe de champion, he made it open to people of all races.

    what a cool cat.

seriously, i could, and might, go on all day about the interesting **** i know about him. he and his situation was seriously fascinating.

I'm going to see that vid. you mentioned. I need to know more about this guy.

He sounds like a fantastic American. The best of us

addison, pick up the book as well. it's a good 400+ pages of info and very interesting.

also, check out used book stores. you might find some gems there. i found this book:

at a used book store. it was like my introduction to jack johnson.

            no prob!

actually, you are doing me a favor by boosting your boxing IQ. that boosts the scene's general IQ!

if you need any recommendations in the future for books on johnson, just find me. i have a collection of about six books purely on jack. not to mention numerous biographies and books that have chapters dedicated to him.

enjoy! hell of a read, but worth it!

thanks bro, but you needn't give me a thing. tis all good.

well, with jack johnson's unforgiveable blackness, you will have your hands full for a while.

when your done with that though, pick up "jack johnson is a dandy". it's an autobiography - yes, you read right - an autobiography written by jack himself on his life. it is a little book of maybe 220 pages or so, but hey, it's jack in his own words! pics are included in the middle.

the book is out of print. i scored my copy(a second printing from 1969) off of ebay for $10. out of print, but, i think i have read a rumor that said it is coming back for another printing.

"papa jack" is another definitive on jack.

that should really satisfy everything you want to know about jack. i have read them all and still enjoy flipping through them often.

now, getting more footage of jack and his fights, that's the hard part!

btw, if you have cable and have the "versus" channel, keep an eye out for any movie entitled "kings of the ring" or something similar. it features four of the greatest heavyweight fighters of all time, and jack is one of them. they play it often. there are several documentary specials that espn occasionally plays too.

well, there you have it. or most of it. believe me, you will enjoy watching and reading about him.

yeah Johnson was alright back then. It is ridiculous when people say he could hang with guys like Ali and others. He would have gotten KOed by everyone of the champs starting with Joe Louis to today, and it would be a toss up if he fought any of the one before Louis.
