Good article, but I think that a little verbal jarring outside the ring doesn't always reflect on a fighters amount of class or lack thereof. I think Shannon Briggs is an outspoken fighter and his rhetoric is done in such a way where it's not hurtful or meant to be a personal attack on another fighter. He called Brock, "brocoli"; I mean how hurtful or classless could that be?

In contrast, fighters like Riccardo Mayorga, talk trash in such a way that their rhetoric is often personal attacks and meant to disrespect an opponents character. I think this type of 'trash talk' is cleary class-less and ultimately comes back to harm the talker.

And Manny has had serious contractual issues with Top Rank AND Golden Boy.
He also claimed that he would quit boxing if he got elected into office.
Doesnt sound like representing all that is good in boxing to me.

im surprised that you didnt mention the absolutely classless verbal attack that briggs made on lyakovich at the weigh in for their title fight....

briggs insisted he was simply trying to get under lyakovich skin but as i recall he was screaming over and over again "ill dig your eyes out you ****in ***g*t"

I didn't want to waste it. I'll use it in the future on a piece I'm doing on Russian fighters. I don't know what has happened to Briggs. He used to be a nice kid, but I think his "win" over Formeman went to his head. Of course, that was one of the most shameful decisions in recent boxing hisatory.
