El mexicano Antonio Margarito aceptó cumplir con la defensa obligatoria del cetro wélter de la Organización Mundial de Boxeo (OMB) ante Paul Williams. Esto prácticamente aborta los planes de Miguel Cotto para unificar con Margarito en junio.

“Hemos decidido pelear con Williams”, compartió Francisco Espinosa, comanejador del púgil azteca, a PRIMERA HORA vía telefónica desde Los Ángeles.

“Parece que el reglamento de la OMB es serio y psicológicamente puede afectar a Margarito. Pues que Cotto haga su defensa con (Oktay) Urkal y luego podremos unificar”, agregó.

Según Espinosa, fueron presionados para aceptar la oferta de Dan Goossen, quien la semana pasada ganó la subasta para presentar el combate al hacer una oferta de $1.5 millones por los derechos, de los cuales $1.2 millones serán para Margarito.

“Hubo mucha presión por parte de todo el mundo. No deseo mencionar nombres, pero ahora dirán que le tenemos miedo a Cotto cuando la realidad es que Antonio desea pelear con los dos. Nadie estará totalmente conforme”, comentó Espinosa.

Asimismo, dijo que le informaron tanto a la OMB como a Top Rank de la decisión para que puedan fijar la fecha del pleito. Incluso, expresó su malestar ante el trato que ha recibido el gladiador que ha sido campeón de la OMB por los pasados cinco años.

“Lo más indicado era que se hiciera una pelea por el título interino para dejar a Margarito hacer la pelea con Cotto. Pero renunciar como campeón no es justo y no creo que hubiese sido la mejor decisión”, señaló.
