Erik Morales should be ranked in that top ten list and certainly ahead of Barrera in my opinion. If that seems like a bold statement I would be more than happy to support my opinion.

The rest of the list is pretty solid though. My own list would look something like:

    Chavez
    Sanchez
    Lopez
    Olivares
    Canto
    Morales
    Zarate
    Saldivar
    Barrera
    Azteca

    roughly...

      I don't see how.

I thought Barrera won all three fights if not established that he's better 1 on 1 than Morales is, He beat Hamed, Beat the Olympian Juarez convincingly, The Legend in Tapia, and I thought he was more impressive in dispatching Kelley.

hey guys, I really want to put Erik on the top 10 Mexican figthers of all time, he is only the second mexican 3 time world champ in 3 diff. weight class ... that should count for something ...

but reading the list i only saw saldivar who has the least impressive record, in the time where 50W can be achieved mid-career ... but seeing oldgringos list saldivar is on it, how good is saldivar?

and on that list who can i take out to make a good argument for erik??

these list is usually based on opoins so every persons list should probably be different but most rank MAB higher. he is smart and knows what he is doing in the ring but for Morales once he is lost he has a long streak of lossess so it looks bad on him another thing Barrera won him twice to. and the only guy to win Nassem Hamed

i also believe Marco is all time and based on their trilogy, and current performance Barrera should be ranked higher than Erik ...

Ricardo lopez is #2 on my lists, although he refused to moved up a measly 3 pounds to take on chiquita gonzales or carbajal, i think he beats both. morales makes my Top 10 ahead of Barrera.

The first fight was a clear win for Morales in my opinion. The only reason it looked close was because of the phantom BS knockdown. Even with that I thought Morales clearly won 7-5. The second fight I thought was an even clearer Morales win. Many ringside observes felt the same way blah blah. The third fight I felt was a clear win for Barrera.

My formula for rating Erik higher than Marco is simple. Both guys have fought great fighters, both guys have some excellent wins on their resumes, both guys never ducked anyone. That's all common knowledge.

Where Erik trumps Barrera (in my opinion) can be any one of these three categories.

#1 - Erik was a more ambitious fighter. His big step up fight was against a hall of fame caliber fighter, he then went on to win world titles at 126 and 130 against the biggest names out there. He was one of the most active champs of recent times and he really tried to go all of the way up to 135 to become the first mexican-born fighter to win world titles in four weight classes. He was seeking out the biggest and baddest more often than Barrera...in my opinion.

#2 - Erik has two big time wins over fighters who -for lack of a better word- HUMILIATED Marco Barrera, in Junior Jones and Manny Pacquiao respectively. Erik put on two world class performances in those fights. Marco does not have that distinction of having a win over a Morales conqueror.

#3 - Erik can claim, or one could make the argument (such as myself), that Erik Morales is the best fighter ever in a particular division in which he fought. Now I know that Bazooka Gomez is traditionally the greatest 122 pounder of all-time...and he is deserving of that label no doubt. Erik is definitely number 2 though. I compiled some numbers on a BSH thread (sadly it got 0 responses)...36-0-0 (28) at 122, 6 former titlists, wins over 2 HOF caliber fighters, 9 title defenses while unifying the titles. Here's the thread: http://www.boxingscene.com/forums/sh...t=erik+morales

Basically Morales was a beast and he did everything that Barrera did and more. The guy never came into a fight to lay down and fold. He was a true blood and guts warrior and never gave the fans a bad show. I could continue, but I'm tired.

Morales at 31 years old, has lost 4 of his last 5 fights. He's visibly shown that he's spent as a fighter and definitely won't be able to continue to compete on the highest level. His last two losses by knockout cement the idea that he's nowhere near his prime.

Barrera at 33 years of age, (keep in mind he's been fighting pro since he was 16)....is about to defend the WBC title against Juan Manuel Marquez, after I remind you...beating an impressive Olympian in Juarez.

It's really a no brainer that Barrera still has a chance to further his career, and whether you like it or not....Morales has stayed too long and might continue to do so. The overall list of opposition they've beaten throughout their careers is comparable....but what gives Barrera the edge has been pointed out.
His win over P4P lower weight king Hamed, head to head matchups and Rocky.

#2 - Erik has two big time wins over fighters who -for lack of a better word- HUMILIATED Marco Barrera, in Junior Jones and Manny Pacquiao respectively. That's because he IS the Morales conqueror.

If M.A.B. beats J.M.M.....Morales moves even further off his radar.
