No one knew then name Klitschko

This may not overwhelm you with surprise, but I dropped the name Wladimir Klitschko to a college classroom yesterday without it being recognized by one person. I was elaborating a passage from David Hume when I referred to my having seen Wladimir Klitschko balance a dollar bill in the air on German television. I mentioned the incident a second time a few minutes later, at which point I stopped and said "How many of you know who that is?", only to receive blank and disappointed faces. (Of course 75% of them were busy trying to get a look at my ****, but that's another story :boobies: ). I said "He's only the heavyweight champ, but I guess no one cares about that anymore" and then continued about my business.

    That is all.

HOLY **** i was just going to mention the same thing. I asked a class of 30 who the heavyweight champ was and the responses I got included Lennox Lewis, James Toney, and "that giant dude with the hair back". Boxing is ****ed up.

If a champ emerges in the next six or eight months (let's not argue the boxing in this thread), the promoters need to get ESPN and 60 Minutes to run specials. Shouldn't 60 Minutes have already done a special on the Klitschkos and their charity work? That would have appealed to a certain adult demographic that does not mainly watch fights. ESPN can reach the kids.

That's my field but not mainly what I teach. I was substituting for a physicist who leads a seminar on scientific reasoning.

As I write this I'm also perusing an article on 'Hume's Newtownianism'

This is middle America homie. Only the Mexicans follow boxing. I can approach any Mexican in the city and ask him what he thinks of Barrera or Margarito (the ones I've asked have never spoken highly of Margarito)

Its funny, but in US, no one ever mentiones their charity work. Although much lesser athlets wit much less accomplishments out of their sports are getting the publicity on a much larger scale.

And I don't mean for this to be a "Boxing is Dead' thread. The point is related but different.

He's not actually the heavyweight champ though, although to be honest, even if he was undisputed champion, I don't think it would make a huge amount of difference. TV/media exposure, along with personality, is just something that he hasn't got/have in abundance.
