    Here's more food for thought:

How the **** is Joe Calzaghe going to break Bernard Hopkins "Middleweight" defense record, at Super Middleweight?

    Hopkins record stands at Middleweight.

The All time defense record, with no division in specific, is 25 defenses, set by Joe Louis at Heavyweight.

So there's another "What the **** is the point of all this" when the whole thing is based on a stat he can't possibly equal because he's not in the same division to do so.

There is just so much wrong with this story, it's comical.

It's still beating Bernards record of defenses, but I know what you mean.

He would be if it was a different sport but it isn't. Still, given Hopkins' comments lately about trying to stop him it still means a fair bit to him.

Records don't mean anything close to what they use to though. Nobody could compare Hopkins or Calzaghe's records to Joe Louis' given the fractous nature of "the business" these days. Records do prove that both were/are the kings of their weights during their tenure but that's about it.

Bozo's right that Hopkins' resume is superior to Calzaghe's though. If the plans come together it looks like the latter will have the chance at least to make it even at least.

Hopkins resume is better than Calzones....but Joe is still active and potentially can out do Hopkins...but by fighting more credible opponents...this is what everyone wants.

It's pretty much nailed on he's fighting Taylor in 2007 and possibly even Hopkins should the Maskaev fight fall through. That'd be great by anyone's measure.

The Hopkins/Maskaev fight is pointless, Hopkins would go in as the favourite anyhow.

I can quite understand Hopkins being more interested in fighting for the HW title. Imagine in 40 years time when he's a scrawny old little man and he can tell the grandkids how he won a heavyweight title. Being beaten from pillar to posty by some valley type doesn't quite have the same ring.
