    Hearns vs Fullmer

This is not the mismatch most people think. If Gene does not cut, he may win. He will maul and wear Tommy out. His down jab will stagger Hearns. Pounded to the side of the head in clinches, Tommy will lose his mobility and fall. Hearns never fought a mauler as good as Gene.

Gene was deceptive. Apparently, Joe Rein told me, he looked like a lumpy thumb breaker lol. But he could hang tough with the best of them...and did! I could see it.

Does Fullmer vs. (Spider) Webb offer a comparison worth making? He gained in 1958 a 10 round (non-title) decision over Webb whom the article describes as a "lanky, boxer-puncher." Then the Cyclone repeated the effort with a 15 round UD in '59.

I haven't heard Rein's name in a long minute. He used to be on these boards way back.

Fullmer came from a boxing family. That usually means adaptability and familiarity with a range of conditions inside the ring. His awkward down jab was one of a kind.

With his best referee, Gene will inflict heavy maulage on Tommy up against the ropes. It will be a temple-slam fest, all in favor of the boy from Utah.

First, it has to get that far. That will be the hard part. Gene has skin like wet toilet paper, and Tommy is one of the top sandmen in the history of boxing. But if Genes survives and can close the distance, he has won at least half the battle.

Tommy would hate close distance mauling from Gene. If he were there, it would be because he couldn't help it, in which case he would not necessarily be winning.
