oh my... joe gans, joe walcott, stanley ketchel, jack blackburn and jim flynn (who knocked out dempsey as a 38 year old) are names people here should know. bettering them is why langford is considered one of the goats. i agree there are a lot of inferior fighters on his record but there are giants too. nobody can fight 100+ (let alone 300+) top5 contenders. by fighting very often there is a much higher chance that someone gets you on your off night. that's why losses were normal.

perez's record is really strange. good find.

Inevitably people use weight as a major issue when discussing mismatches. Many times though, a great heavyweight will take on much larger men and make winning look easy. Size and strenght are important, but not an exclusive arbitrator of victory.

Heavyweight division history is loaded with smaller fighters destroying larger opponents. Speed, skill and punching power trump size. Today’s boxing fans are tuned into size like they are watching WWE. Few know anything of the skills of the sport.

I loved watching Chris Byrd making these big guys look like feeble amateurs, loved it. Immense skill...…..Rockin'

Ali had more than most wanna admit. He gets a pass cuz he did have some epic events + fought a lot of big names that covers up the bs opponents.

Wladimir is definitely up there. RJJ too. Anyone who tried keeping multiple titles has lotsa bs mando defenses that weaken their resume.

Most all fighters build experience off of lesser talent. It’s what they do against their best opponents that builds legacy.

Give Jack Dempsey ROIDS and you have a monster.

in some of his fights, especially early, he barely weighed 180

                  many were 181

if the divisions were structured differently like today, then he would train differently... focusing on speed/endurance rather than filling out at heavyweight to compete against larger opponents

big cruisers today would be much bigger than Dempsey

cruisers today can weigh 215-220 on fight-night... Dempsey weighed 181 at the same-day weigh in

he would be more suited to LHW than cruiser, so would eat/train differently... he is likely a similar size to Kovalev

                    Untrue.

We are talking Dempsey as heavyweight champion. Ali was fighting below 200 early in his career but he filled out to be 215 in his prime.

Dempsey was a shredded 190’pounder without ROIDS.

All the major heavyweights since the 90’s were juicing big time. Without it predominantly forget the massive physiques. The tall muscular heavyweights would then be tall and lanky losing 20 pounds at least of muscle.

Dempsey on ROIDS and you have a monster.

he was not " shredded at 190"... he looked exactly like Kovalev would look if Kovalev DID NOT HAVE TO MAKE WEIGHT

in today's era, Dempsey would be like every other non-heavyweight... he would not be bulking up to compete with bigger fighters, he would be making weight and training for speed/endurance...

t is a totally different game at heavyweight, and Dempsey simply would not be a heavyweight in this era... he would be cutting weight, like everyone else
