Many of Dempsey's sparring partners were black fighters of the day. Battling Jim Johnson who fought Jack Johnson to a draw was a Dempsey sparring partner who Dempsey KO'd in a sparring session.
Harry Wills was offered an opportunity to join Dempsey's camp but declined. His reasoning was that he didn't want to be just a sparring partner to Dempsey. But, had he taken that offer, he would have had an opportunity to get in the ring with him and establish whether or not he was truly the better of the two. The press would have picked up on that in a hot minute. This would have created more public demand for a title fight between the two or Dempsey would have to admit he got licked in sparring. In hindsight, another missed opportunity by Wills.
