And with real competition in boxing and MMA, it's more about winning and losing. I care more about if someone can get it done in the ring (or cage). So while someone like a Muhammad Ali could talk the fans into an arena that wouldn't be worth a damn if he didn't still win most of his fights.
I personally prefer the Fedor/Marciano/A. Silva approach of someone more low key, but some of those guys I didn't mind, like Ali or Mayweather later in his career, since he was very skilled. Or a Sugar Ray Leonard, since he beat the top guys of his era too. The only fighters I couldn't stand whose mouths I was glad to see shut were Mayorga, Vargas (both by De La Hoya) and Hamed (by Barrera, but by UD, instead of by stoppage, although that pro wrestling style turnbuckle face smash in the final round was a nice touch). As for the MMA guys, it would only be maybe someone like Tito Ortiz, who I was glad to see get stopped by an aging Liddell, twice. Then Chuck had to go ruin it by fighting him again when he was way past shot.
If you wanna catch up on the current product, check out AEW on TNT Wednesday nights at 8. They're a throwback to the old NWA Crockett days with the Horsemen. WWE stuff is on WWE Network, which is offering free trials to new customers and 10 a month later on, but trials are extended now with this corona virus going around and with a lot fewer subscriptions then expected. They even put their PPVs on there too. I believe AEW puts theirs on Bleacher Report, not sure of the site yet, but I plan on getting a subscription when I can, if those are archived too or maybe getting them on DVD.
It has been said that Ali got his promo skills from 50s ATG Gorgeous George when Ali met him early in his career. I've also heard that matches were often real or shoots mostly in the old days, then later a combination of real and scripted, until it became mostly then eventually all scripted. Boxing and wrestling have kind of had a strange relationship over the years, between some boxers trying to get into wrestling, like Primo Carnera or retired ones getting involved in storylines, like Buster Douglas or Mike Tyson or the famously bad boxer vs. wrestler match with Ali vs. Antonio Inoki. That's something that should have been a scripted exhibition, for sure. Man, did they botch that. Royce Gracie used to throw those low leg kicks later in his career from watching that fight though.Comment

That'd just make you careful bud. A much less knowledgeable person than you can make the same boast.
I do not think it's an insult to push you toward growing your chronological range and increasing your knowledge bank.
If you want me to be honest of course I believe I am the most knowledgeable poster. I can speak at length to any era and can only be outshined in specific eras by others. You for example have done it with early-mid 20th century history. However you wouldn't even begin to dance with me over 17th century American boxing. I am fine nodding toward others for when a question begs an era I know they know better than I so long as I know I also know four or five more better than they....and let's be honest, I fold quick actually. You only taught me one fighter and I give you the nod based off that. I don't actually know you know the era better, but I am impressed and willing to learn until it seems like you don't, if you didn't.
Don't get me wrong though, I am not telling you I am more knowledgeable, I am expressing my bias to you. You saying being right is important. I say knowing a lot about a lot is important. Who's right? Who really cares.
I leave myself open all the time, sometimes I post dates from memory instead of hitting up boxrec. sometimes I tell the wrong story for the wrong name. I'm good with it, you'd be less so i assume, it's not really important is it? I cover a big range and as long as theres guys who don't they will correct my dates and names and ****.
I meant what I said as a friendly you know some ****, yer alright kinda thing.
I'll leave you with this. A good portion of Boxrec's coverage of Fitzs era comes from Pete Maher the book not fighter, by matt donnellon. Read the book, chock full of errors actually. It's hard to right about everything when you cover so much. It's easy to type Corbett when you mean Sharkey if you're mind is on the sequences and not names. It's easy to be right about a small amount.Comment

One of his earliest articles was covering the Angulo/Kirkman brawl, ""like Hagler vs Hearns on Steroids.""
Yeah, he was still waiting for his nads to drop and still is, but with a little effort, U could be his colleagueComment

Nat said crazy shyte.
But it's all about refering to the best available evidence.
Marciano had fits with Charles. Dempsey would devour him.
Marciano was all about timing and consistency. Kinda like fast food. Nothing special, but pervasive... even unavoidable.
Swap him soothin Quarry and Jerry becomes one of the most dominant champions in the history of the sport, and Marciano never even breaks out of the local circuit.Comment

And I'm going to keep doing it because you weren't able to prove anything I said incorrect. I hope it forces you to further have a breakdown so your grandchildren can finally give you the help that you so desperately needComment

Yes and with promo skills like that, he should be. Mic skills are overrated these days IMO though. It should be more about what you do in the ring and the story they tell in there. Guys like Sabu, Andre The Giant and Dean Malenko didn't have to talk much to "get over", as they say in the business. There's even a manager today in the new AEW promotion called Orange Cassidy (Freshly Squeezed), who never talks. All he has to do is look call, make his motions and slap on that pair of sunglasses. Plus he works matches sometimes. So they're not needed, but they definitely help.

I like the more humble boxer as well. If you can back it up, that's one thing. And I get promoting the fight. Personality wise, I preferred the older more mature Floyd rather than the young prick, though it was entertaining enough. And it was obviously profitable for him.
Wrestling has always been about the drama! I mean I know it's scripted (the match) but it also takes a high skill level, of course, and those guys get really busted up. But for sure, the drama of it all is a HUGE part of the allure.Comment
