21 yr old Luck officially 15-0, 15 KOs and holder of the showy white title with better results with common opposition, but more importantly, in between fight he was headlining in packed wild west shows, big stuff and big biz.

Johnson wired his mgr Billy McCarty who accepted immediately, but after the Pelkey match scheduled in a few days in Tommy Burns' new Canadian arena.

Alas, in one of those inexplicable Luck died in a fight that had scarcely started. Speculation has it he had been Thrown from his horse during a solo foray into the Rocky Mountains between training.

Doubtless the bout was to be held in JJ new home of Paris.

History might have been rewritten from what we know today. A few years later another cowboy relieved JJ of his belt in a huge upset.

Poor Pelkey had done literally nothing, but was hauled off to jail on murder charges and had to go into heavy debt defending himself and died a long drawn out tragedy. Burns' arena burned to the ground the very next day, a tale so bewildering that The Bard hisself would've been flabbergasted.

Johnson offered to defend his title against McCarty in Canada.Burns whose cash cow was Pelkey wired back ," it would not be in the best interests of boxing",but he really meant in the best interests of Burns.

      - - Hence I stated more probably the fight would be in Paris who would be agog over the Big Young Strapping Cowboy and his 6-6,300 lb Indian Medicine Man Daddy if you wish to talk of Daddies in boxing.

How much Native American blood McCarty's Father had is problematical ,some said he was a gypsy from Italy. McCarty's name meant nothing in Paris or in any other country for that matter. The fight would have been staged by Tommy Burns in Canada.

          - - You know bugger all about American fighters. Dempsey went on a French tour and was wildly popular.

More importantly we know the French staged the Battling Johnson fight and were pushing for Langford and Jeanette, hence in frustration stripping JJ for Sam and Joe to have a World Title fight in a classic won by Sam. There were no Black vs Black Hvy title bouts in the US until Joe Louis came along. The US had JJ under conviction, so the Burns venue just more of your French Fairie dust you sprinkle on your fried French Snails.

this same man is calling Johnson horrible names, and imploring a member of the White Race to end Johnson in the ring. Its just crazy. Pekey fought for the white heavyweight of the world.

Luther McCarty beat Jack Johnson title opponents more impressively than he did! Like Frank Moran, Fireman Flynn, and Al Kaufman. And he drew with Jess Willard , who of course knocked Johnson out!

If this fight take place in 1914 he likely knocks Johnson out. Johnson was on the slide by 1913.

            • DeWitt Van Court, boxing instructor of James J. Jeffries, asserted that McCarty was "[...] unquestionably the greatest young heavyweight prospect since the days of John L. Sullivan. McCarty had a huge frame, standing six feet four inches tall and having a reach of eighty-one inches. He weighed 205 pounds and stripped in the finest of condition and had really only begun to fill out at the time he died."
            • Dan Cuoco, boxing historian and director of the International Boxing Research Organization stated, "Luther McCarty was big and strong and considered by most boxing experts as the best of the 'White Hopes."]
            • Billy McCarney, promoter of McCarty, elected McCarty as the greatest heavyweight ever. He anticipated that people would think sentiment caused him to choose McCartysince he developed and managed him but gave his reasons as follows. "[McCarty] was a natural born fighter. He had only two years of ring experience. Never had seen a boxing bout until he was forced in as a substitute at a show he attended with some cowboy friends [...] He was a combination of speed, cleverness, gameness and hitting ability. Immune to
            • punishment, loving the lust of battle, gifted with every physical requirement - Luther McCarty was the world's greatest heavyweight"
            • John Lardner, American sports writer, conceded that McCarty "may well have been the best fighter of all the white hopes." He quotes Fleischer as saying, "There is little doubt that had McCarty lived he would have won the title [...] McCarty ... was not as big as Willard, but he was quite large ... and fast for his size."

Fair play to Johnson for offering to defend against McCarty then! lol

Billy McCarney was his manager, hardly an objective source!

Nat Fleischer? Remind us again whom he picked as his number 1 heavyweight of all time?
Wasn't it someone called Jack Something? Johns was it? No, I remember now ,it was Johnson.Jack Johnson!

Dempsey was the worlds champion. McCarty an unknown outside the US and Canada .
Johnson offered to defend his title in Canada which, last time I was there,[in Toronto,] is outside the jurisdiction of the US.

The French Federation stripped Johnson of his title for 3 weeks, on the grounds that he was a convicted felon,

I posted their statement from Victor Dreyer yesterday!
When the International Boxing Union failed to follow suit, the French Federation reversed their decision and stripped Langford whom they had awarded their version of the crown to for his win over Jeannette.
Langford then fought Mathew Curran in the same arena he had fought Jeannette,it was NOT billed as a title fight of any kind, because of course it wasn't.
Seems I know a bit more about it than you do Forum's Fool .lol

The sir name was Scottish, which could mean he was the best Scottish heavyweight ever. It would not take much to be the #1 Scottish heavyweight of all time. I myself can not name a good one. He doesn't look native American, though he defectively had some native American blood as did Jack Dempsey. Like 25% of less. Most African American people have roughly 20% of white DNA .

Where is the contact? Without it is just another headline that is tough to confirm. Did McCarthy at least say Johnson offered him a fight? Where? Produce the news link.

IMO, Johnson avoided fight with Gunboat Smith a man who knock him silly in execution match, ( when Smith was inexperienced ) and beat his some of his title opponents and a guy named Langford.

Without a doubt Johnson avoided his chief competition more so that another heavyweight champion ( while he was active ) and he drew with a journeyman and Super middle weight as champion, getting knocked out by one of the worst champions of all time. Got it?

Johnson telegraphed Tommy Burns offering to defend against McCarty in Burns arena.
Burns made a public statement saying he would not promote Johnson as he was detrimental to boxing.
Graeme Kent in his White Hopes book states McCarney ,McCarty's manager was in negotiations with Johnson for a title fight when they took the Pelkey fight.

In actual fact Burns wanted his meal ticket Pelkey [not Pekey]loL to fight McCarty ,[not McCarthy] and he thought Johnson would beat McCarty and blow the prospect to that fight out of the water its all in Pollacks book.
How many boxing contracts do you have?
Produce a newspaper heading in which Smith challenges Johnson?

Where is the evidence that Johnson avoided Smith?

Smith never implied that in his interview with Peter Heller, nor did he say he knocked Johnson silly, he said he knocked him through the ropes.

Smith was stopped by 2 journeymen in1910 .
1911 Lost to 2 journeymen and was kod by lourneyman Jack Geyer 11-3-1
1912 lost to Geyer again. Lost to journeyman Jim Stewart.Lost to Porky Flynn.Beat Moran in a stinker in which half the audience walked out
1913 Won a dubious decision over Langford.
1914 Lost to Carpentier.Ko'd by Langford
When did Smith show himself to be the foremost challenger to Johnson, which year?

Johnson was knocked through the ropes in a spar with Smith he continued the spar and finished the 4 rds, then he sparred 8rds with42 other sparring partners.
                      Johnson boxed Smith first .4rds
                      Armstrong 2 rds
                      Arslinger 2 rds
                      Mills 2 rds
                      Lanum 2rds
If Johnson was knocked silly by Smith as you have told us about 100 times , about twice a week on average! Is it likely he would then spar another 8 rds immediately afterwards ?
The San Francisco Evening Post said Smith knocked Johnson down.

The San Francisco Call who had a reporter present never mentioned any KD

The San Francisco Examiner likes wise never mentioned any KD

                      The San Francisco Chronicle;
"There are a number of contradictory stories about the knockdown Gunboat Smith is said to have scored on Johnson".

" The story that Gun Boat Smith knocked Johnson down in a sparring exhibition Sunday afternoon was a bit stretched.
Johnson slipped on the canvas and the balance of the yarn was easy to concoct."

There was speculation that the KD was contrived to
boost the gate for the Johnson v Ketchel fight.

George Little Johnson's manager said the canvas should have been sprinkled before the spar but it was not and this accounted for the slip, that is obviously what a manager would say,and is probably damage limitation .

So we have ONE paper saying it happened.
Two never mentioning any KD .
One saying it was a slip.

Bottom line a champion may or may not have been legitimately floored in a sparring session.
                      BIG DEAL!

                      Some of Smiths performances.

                      ref: Billy Joh
The bout was "slow and uninteresting, and the finish as mysterious as it was unexpected...The pair had just broken from a clinch in the centre of the ring when Savage went to the floor. He laid on his back with both arms outstretched and did not move a muscle" while counted out. He had been hit by a "long swinging right ... but it did not seem hard enough to knock him out". (New York Times).

                      2:00 ref: Billy Joh
Referee stopped the bout to save Wuest from a knockout. Smith had been warned repeatedly about hitting on the break, and many at ringside thought the ref had disqualified Smith. After the bout Joh said "I ought to have disqualified him."

                      ref: **** Fleming
Smith relied almost totally on a stiff left jab, but Langford seemed unfazed by it and bided his time, working to the body. Late in the fight he began a serious assault and had Smith bleeding freely. When referee Fleming raised Smith's arm in victory, many ringsiders were surprised. (This "mixed bout" had previously been banned by the state of New York.)

Dempsey knocked Smith down with a left jolt a minute into round one. For the remainder of the round Smith was on the defensive, trying unsuccessfully to parry or slip the punches that put him down repeatedly. Smith again went on the offensive at the start of the second, but Dempsey easily sidestepped the veteran fighter and put him down again. A short right to the head laid Smith out for the full count, he'd been down a total of 9 times.

Again he lurches to his feet only to be met by Smith's left hook and put down again. Before the ref can count he drags himself up by the ropes but is saved by Referee Tone.

A sweeping right put Smith down in round 1. A left hook put Smith down for seven in the second round, before the knockout at just over 2 minutes in the third. Days later Smith claimed he'd been sick.
Smith was floored by a super middle and beaten by him for the title of White Heavyweight Champion. Carpentier was 20years old and a month earlier had refereed Johnson v Moran,in the film of the fight he looks like a boy against them asked if he wanted to fight Johnson he said," I am not ready for him.,I am too light",yet he floored and beat Smith?
one was against Moran in which half the audience left in disgust.
Has a record of 52-28-10 and was ko'd 12 times! Why would Johnson avoid him?
There was a narrow window of about a year when Smith would have been a viable challenger for Johnson, that ended when he was beaten by Carpentier and obliterated by Langford.
