  • How good was henry armstrong

He had crab like odd style and never stopped throwing punches, called the human buzz saw.

He's one the greatest fighters of all time, possibly the greatest. He was the first fighter to become a champion in 3 weight classes simultaneously. Defeated 11 Hall of Famers and 16 champions overall. Probably the best swarmer ever.

Lets see now... (takes a fresh noggin of opium puts it in pipe with hash...lights up)... Hummm.... Homicidal Hank huh?

A famous martial artist and writer publishing a little ditty of a book, writing under an assumed name tells us (paraphrasing)

The fight was on, and Joe D was a cutie...rapier left jab, sweet feet, dazzling and smooth...Joe D could not miss stan the man... stan who had two club feet, punches that looped...Stan had to catch ya and today it looked like his chances of catching Joe d were slim to none and slim had left town, as they say...

And on the punishment went, and joey danced away smiling, putting on the ritz...and then it happened with a sickening thud. Alas Stan had landed, Joe was prone, the crowd exhaled a collective gasp...

This fictional fight is all about the two archetypes that perpetuate the Sweet Science. We have the smooth, technically gifted, boxer. Then we have the man of will, force...the man with technical abilities not obvious, and that looked absent. the brawler, the puncher, the terminator who keeps coming forwards. we see this battle take place oh so often and most fighters realistically have aspects of both.

Armstrong was considered by the pundits to be the representative for one type of the greatest fighter to walk the earth, Robinson was considered to be the representative for the other.

When we watch the spirit that embodies the archetype for armstrong, and we see guys like Marciano, la motta, Frazier, Holyfield (younger Holly), we see guys that seem to never tire of punching... But when we see Armstrong? clearly he was supreme in his ability to come forward and press his advantage. And the ability to do just that is what made him so great. Armstrong was considered to be: to some, the best, to others right behind Robinson, to most, in the short list of the greatest.

My own opinion? Everytime one purports to make a casual list, someone who does not like that fighter explains why those fights are a wash... I have learned that every fight has a reason why it was not so great and why the person lauded is not really as laudable as claimed.

So...Greatness is a quality. Armstrong had it. I have no credence to say how much, how little compared to others, other than to say few fighters were great and Armstrong was one of them... And I don't know if he was number 3 number 2 number 10! lol.

I remember seeing him as mystery guest on the panel show, I've Got A Secret. He came on as the minister he had become with secret previous occupation!

This. Armstrong had a very short prime but in it he was great. I'd put Frazier second all time swarmer type of fighter. The stamina Armstrong had was unreal.

Isn't the top 3 usually listed here as

                    Robinson
                    Armstrong
                    Greb

And would you guys say that's accurate? If so, who should fill out the top 5? Ali, Louis? Louis, Ali? Or should a middleweight like Monzon or Hagler be in there?
