To this day I never told my parents about the concussion he gave me, I probably could have died lol.

I was told that they thought he had killed me as my head crashed into the sink...and then I got up, went into an office, grabbed a scissors and stuck it in the 18 year old's chest. i don't remember any of this...I woke up some time later, walking around trying to remember things that happened...

I think Baer when he really got fighting went to a place like that and decided, like many of us would, that he didn't want that. So he learned to use his right once in a while, but not to really throw it as an anvil. I don't blame him.

I think under different circumstances, if he had been raised differently he may have been a bit more dangerous in the ring...as it was he would not cross a certain line, probably one of the reasons he lost to Braddock.
that's a great insight. I think Braddock plain out-boxed him. But baer probably carrier serious trauma from those wins. He was ferocious when he needed to be. Obviously he had it made outside the ring, so the ambition took a hit for other reasons. But being a "brute" was the last thing he wanted to be. Great observation.

Thanks for the inspirational reply regarding the NBA and Olympics. Steroids is another topic and it is a vastly complicated one. We are talking about 7 lbs of muscles - on athletes who are not even close to their maximal potential regarding muscle growth. There is therefore a significant difference to these individuals, and 220+ lbs powerhouses. Thus, it is my assessment, that it should be fairly "easy". This again does not have anything to do with my given reply.

This "he" is referring to Adrien Broner. And I belive his talent would be much more pronounced in the lightweight division (afterall, he is a four division World champion).

      Have a nice day.

Idk if Id consider it wasted talent cuz he was a title holder twice at HW, but I think Chris Byrd's legacy would be bigger & more impressive overall if he'd had fought & won titles at 168, 175 & 200 before dipping his toe into HW where I suspect he'd still have been able to be a title holder.

I kinda feel Olivares and Zarate kinda qualify:

Olivares was prone to partying. That has been true of a lot of fighters, but he kept fighting. While he would have always struggled with big punchers, he could have further strengthened his claim for best Bantamweight, after Eder Jofre, if he didn't let himself go so bad.

Zarate retiring and then coming back cost him some great years. Not as bad a life decision as Olivares, but he could have been the Little Man's Joe Louis.

yeah, I feel there have been a number of fighters like that throughout history.

It used to be that hte Heavyweight belt was the only belt that mattered. If you could compete at Heavyweight, even if on the small side, you might as well take the gamble.

Seeing Byrd in the other divisions would certainly help folks to appreciate just how "small" he was fighting at Hw. Every fight announcer would mention his amateur past as a Middleweight, but to really get a full perspective of it all.
