As has been said he revolutionised boxing, was unbeatable for over 10 years, from his early KO loss to Joe Choynski until the 26th rd collapse under the record blazing sun inn 1915 was never KO'd or even looked like losing. He could do things that present day boxers don't know a thing about, as well as being able to do what today's boxers do. He had all the shots , KO power when he wanted to and more. He was a GREAT heavyweight. close to the top.
Get off the nostalgia train. His best wins were middleweights and novices.

Until Louis, Johnson had the highest average weight percentage for his challengers. You seriously need to do some research!

He said blazing, not breaking.I was there in early April some few years ago,it was in the 80's and the humidity was very draining.I was changing clothes and showering 3/4 times a day ,and I was only walking around near the Malecon, the sea front.

OK - not record breaking but not blazing sun either - it was in the low 70s with an overcast sky. Yes it can get into the 80s but were you there the first week of April?

Yes the humidity can make the air thick and difficult to breathe but NO blazing sun! Clouds!

Local Havana newspaper for April 4th listed the temperature as 72.

But what can one do; believe what you like.

Making excuses for Jack Johnson is a History Fourm mainstay.

Yes I was there the same week.
Johnson was in that ring for what10/15 minutes before the fight almost 26 ,3 minute rounds plus the minutes rest between .That's a long time for a 37 years old man who hasnt been in top shape for 5 years and has led a life of dissipation.A long time for such a man fighting a trained to the minute giant whom he had comprehensively outpointed over the first 20 rds,and expended a lot of energy trying to stop.Though he was in front after the first 20 rds Johnson realised he would lose he couldn't take Willard out when he was fresh and now he was almost exhausted and knew he couldn't go another 25rds.The odds were stacked against him from the start ,his ego had told him he could stop the big cowboy before his own energy and stamina left him.He had grossly overestimated his own remaining stamina and underestimated the durability and strength of Big Jess.Willard said," it was hotter than hell in there."I'l go with that.In passing I think it's one of Johnson's best performances.

            • Yea history by quotes vs. the weather report.

Even Willard's most recent biographer concluded that the dementia ridden Willard was confusing Havana with Toledo where it was in fact 100 degrees.

                  - - Big Jess KTFO him and skews the challenger list.

O'brien at 162 and Ketchell puffed in a wool overcoat at 170 ain't cuttin' it today.

Willard made that quote in the 20''s.
Ever been to Havana in April?
