It is worth saying here, to bring things back on track as well, that Ray had a very open mind about other fighting disciplines. I can remember a thread where Bruce Lee was hitting the bag and a whole bunch of haters were at it. Ray basically said that what Lee was doing was remarkable... Bruce was hitting the bag with a whole lot of power, and it was remarkable, he didn't even have gloves on! Ray got it...

With an Italian name, I wonder if Ray was Catholic? I never managed to ferret that information out. And has anyone replied to the question how old he was? Seventy-eight would be about my guess.

We are standing in Ray's monument. Let me try to explain why in my view no one should be censured for subjects broached here.
Everyone who is going to has already stopped by and offered their condolences. It is just we old timers here to keep Ray somewhat alive. New members are not going to come to this thread. There is no reason they should. Ray will just fade off into nothingness. He will anyway, as we all will. But I like him lingering around just a bit more, if you will. No doubt there have been other such threads in the past. Of course they are gone from the front page though. Someday Ray will be gone from the front page as well. Not right now, however. As long as we talk, Ray lives here. All we gotta do is not get snappy with each other like I kinda did, or at least felt, with Jaded. I know he was a big fan of Ray's, too.
If someone feels I am not letting Ray rest in peace, like I said, I believe afterlife is about continuing the strife, otherwise it would not be interesting. So you are exactly right, I am not letting Ray rest in peace quite yet.Last edited by The Old LefHook; 08-01-2019, 12:42 AM.

A commentator at Ray's mini obituary says he was in a musical band with Ray. Sounds like a rock band. I didn't even know that. We had even more in common. I played in bands and taught guitar for years. I still play in bands.

A conversation with Ray
One of the best conversations I had with Ray was about kids being rehabilitated through the fighting arts. Ray was a realist...and I don't only mean this philosophically...Having interacted with kids in bad areas, there is a certain percentage to the game. People who have put the time in understand this, it makes you a bit jaded actually. You find a way to protect yourself.
Ray made the point that one taking kids in and trying to introduce them into a discipline like boxing, martial arts, must be prepared for heart ache. And he was absolutely correct. Ray was quick to always credit the kids who managed to make something of themselves, and to credit those who tried. My understanding was that he was very generous with his time and resources to anyone who made an effort.
It takes a very strong person to watch...as so many young people get pulled back into the crap, and to keep extending oneself time and time again. It takes not judging people, when we judge people everyday to get from point A to point B. And it takes generosity...I mean its one thing to give our money, and our things away, but our time! Ray gave equipment away, we had someone post who had been given such equipment.
Ray apparently used his boxing situation to extend himself, and his time to give kids a chance, a crack at a boxing future. We shared a great PM chain about how it feels to see when it does not work out, and how nice it is when it does... I used the martial arts much the way Ray used boxing, but Ray accomplished so much, that I looked to him as a mentor in this regard. He set a standard with his actions in this respect. On those days when it gets frustrating and one wants to give up on people? I just remember my conversations with Ray on this subject.

I would like to know if anyone has a photo of Ray they could post. I have never seen what he looked like. If anyone has a photo, could they post it in this thread, please?
