I just watched the Ruddock-Dokes clip. Same situation, the referee should have called Dokes down (held up by the ropes) and given him an eight count; or stop the fight.

Once again very ugly but what was Ruddock to do?

Should have done the walk away style KO, like Mark Hunt does in MMA. When he walks away, the ref usually waves it off.

Your a correct (finally) most would but the greats would not!

You see bad shots like that happen when fighters are close to one another. In this example Mercer was actually moving away then come back on him knowing he was helpless.

I see that same situation at mma fights at times. One guy gets KO'd on the floor not moving and the opponent jumps on him and punches him in the head. The man is unconscious why continue to punch?
In the old school yards you'd be named a coward and a punk and someone would kick your butt right then and there.

Has nothing to do with toughness or dominance it has to do with intelligence.

        Ray

Good observation of Mercer moving back in to finish the job.

Agree with you on both counts. Referees were way out of position for whatever reason. And in the last one.....why even count??? The guy was toast!

Been a long time, man. Hope everything is well with you!

I thought the ref was only two punches too late, maybe Holmes could see the kid was out of it and I couldn't , but when Holmes started calling for the ref to stop the fight I didn't think Frazier was yet out of it. A couple of right hands later he certainly was and it would have been best had the ref stopped it when Holmes suggested he should. But I think I would have stop that fight very close to the same time.

Thanks for posting the clip you made me look at Marvis Frazier for the first time (other than the Holmes fight).

This is off topic: I always questioned why father Joe took the Holmes fight with Marvis only having 10 fights. Is it too cynical to think he knew the kid would never make it all the way to the top, so much too early he grabbed the kid a 2.5 million dollar payday before the bubble busted?

The logic works, why else take that fight? - But then three years later he fed the kid to Mike Tyson, which has to be for a different reason, certainly Marvis got no where near the same money for the Tyson fight.

The amazing thing those are Marvis Frazier's only loses over 21 fights, and while his victories came against mostly 'no-names' (save Tillis and Bugner) when you glance at his record and competition you see a lot of green (winning records and winning streaks) and very little red. He wasn't fighting tomato cans as they say.

Anyway thank you for letting me rant.

Yes, and decisions over James Broad and Bonecrusher Smith were pretty good wins too (though BoxRec states "most at ringside felt Smith deserved the win". Marvis had his jaw broken in 5th round - ouch, that hurts, if it had been me, I had stayed on my stool.)

Also, I remember watching Ken Norton vs Randy Stephens (1978; not on Youtube), in which Norton got praised by ringside reporters for not throwing a last, devastating punch when he had the opportunity.
Instead, he took a step back.

BoxRec: “When the bout was over, Stephens' manager thanked Norton for letting up on his boxer.”

And I take it a lot of green as in money? At least with Holmes and Tyson? And man, he definitely earned every cent as he got hurt pretty badly in those two fights. I hope Marvis saved his money and is doing well now.

Haven't heard anything about Marvis in ages.
