We can go Simpsons with this one: "worst ref ever." - The ref should have stopped the fight; he could have at least called a knockdown (ropes were holding Pegues up); he did make sure he looked quite dramatic when jumping on Mercer, when it was way too late. "Worst ref ever."
The ref, Genaro Rodriguez has a long resume, so it's probably unfair to judge him on one night, but from that one clip, Yep, 'worst ref ever.' What was he waiting for?

P.S. Loved the way the announcers tried to make it all OK.

Sort of reminds me of ruddocks ko of dokes, how he winds up that last shot made me feel a little sick.

The shame is, I believe most top level fighters would do as Mercer did, from all the boxing I have watched. But if it happened in a reputable gym, they would have to expel the guy in a hurry, wouldn't they, even if it was a fierce grudge match? There is a little more leeway for brutality in an actual prize fight where the laws of liability are relaxed.

"The shame is, I believe most top level fighters would do as Mercer did"............................
Your a correct (finally) most would but the greats would not!
You see bad shots like that happen when fighters are close to one another. In this example Mercer was actually moving away then come back on him knowing he was helpless.
I see that same situation at mma fights at times. One guy gets KO'd on the floor not moving and the opponent jumps on him and punches him in the head. The man is unconscious why continue to punch?
In the old school yards you'd be named a coward and a punk and someone would kick your butt right then and there.
Has nothing to do with toughness or dominance it has to do with intelligence.

I thought the fault lied with the referee but there seems to be some consensus here that Mercer's actions were wrong.
I am not being cheeky when I ask, what should Mercer have done; what would have been the proper thing to do?
I suspect we all agree he shouldn't have let Pegues of the hook, but what then?
