    Some other quotes about Langford:

"I think Sam Langford was the greatest fighter we ever had. In 1916 I came here and had a couple of fights and won them. I was managed by a fellow named John the Barber. After winning these two fights he said, "I got a good fight for you." I said, "Who is it?" He says, "Sam Langford." I said, "Not me! Goodbye!" He was a great fighter and I didn't have the experience to fight a man like that. He was a hell of a puncher, never been licked, so why should I get my brains knocked out for nothing? Even at my best I don't know whether I could lick him or not. He was a good man, good puncher, rough, tough.'" --Jack Dempsey

“The hell I feared no man. There was one man I wouldn’t fight because I knew he would flatten me. I was afraid of Sam Langford.” -- Jack Dempsey

"That’s an easy one. Sam Langford and nobody came close to being as good as he was at his peak.

Langford vs Dempsey both in their prime would have been bad news for Dempsey. He could be hit with a right hand and if anybody had a right hand it was the tar baby. I will go further and declare that Langford would have waded through every heavyweight champion we've had including the current soldier boy Joe Louis. Louis is a great champ, but he is inclined to get hot and bothered when the going gets rough. Langford was as cool as an iceberg every minute that he was in there. He never lost his head." --Gunboat Smith

For my money, Langford was the greatest p4p fighter ever.

Barbados Joe Walcott, Joe Gans, Sam Langford, Harry Greb, Benny Leonard. Lots of guys who I'd want to see on film before rating them tops. Unfortunately, only scraps of fight films exist if any, on ancient film.

It's hard to rate guys you can't see.

This guy is the epitome of the word Legend! It's too bad only hardcore fans know of him.

Though Louis certainly hit hard, his mystique is more built around his ability to set up and deliver his power in a technically correct way imo. He wasn’t just starching fighters, he was doing it in a beautiful way with combinations that flowed straight from the heavens.

That said, I take fighter testimony with a pinch of salt. A lot depends on when you fight someone, the type of punches they land on you etc. You often see guys will rate a fighters power more if they went several rounds with them, whereas if they get knocked out clean and early they don’t. Not surprising cos an extended beat down gives you plenty of time to think about how much this ***** hurts, where most people don’t even remember the punch that Ko’s them

Not quite right. Larry said Shavers hit harder.
              Tyson hit sharper .
The difference is, Tyson was better at hitting the right targets.

Sharkey was in the best position to compare the two firsthand. Dempsey got more of his body behind a punch, more torque. Louis created openings with combinations and counter punching much like Holyfield. Very accurate and deceptive speed in his hands.

Great quote. Havent seen enough of Langford to judge him vs Louis, but Louis did tend to have more trouble with smaller fighters than he did bigger ones.

And he could be hurt vs a powerful smaller guy as Billy Conn showed. By the way people speak about him Langford had lights out power that carried way above his natural weight.

Who knows. Louis could knock out anyone, especially someone that much smaller. Bet it would have been a great fight

ITs criminal we cant see any of Greb. Langford there are a few clips around. Some footage at least to get an idea of how he fought.

Unbelievable there isnt a single scrap on Greb, who might be the greatest fighter ever, one of the greatest ever in two of the deepest divisions in boxing history.

The descriptions make him sound like a much rougher, more savvy on the inside, Manny Pacquiao type with high volume and unpredictable angles. Bet he was incredible to watch.

Fleischer and Arcel rated Greb very highly all time. Fleischer complained about Grebs fouling tactics...holding and hitting specifically ....which Nat wrote that Greb is guilty of in his every bout.
