I do not think Marciano brought anywhere near the pressure cooker that Frazier did. Joe "pressurized," at a much faster rate. Joe was pretty much always at the pace that Rocky finished Moore off at. Rocky did not fight at that intensity for every minute of every round. In his own way he took his time; in his own way he was patient.

No such thing as a "16' ring"! The size of the fight area is determined by the turnbuckles used.
Everlast makes a 20 & 22 foot rings. (might have changed now)
The 20 could be brought down to a 17.5' by enlarging the turnbuckle to it's longest length. You can also open that ring up to be 21' by shortening the turnbuckles but it would decrease the aproon (outside edge) dramatically.
The 22' could open up to a 23' and other than the old 24' that used to be around the 23' is a huge ring. Most rings are 20'.
I like Marciano over Jones, it will take Rocky some time to cut the angles down but he would hurt Roy.
Charles was not an old man when he fought Marciano and Charles is an all time great. He could box and punch effectively and he gave Marciano fits but when you got hit square from Rocky you needed to recover and I don't see that from Jones.
Now that 24' ring would help Roy a whole lot.........

Thanks for the good information on rings. I thought there was an old practice ring of 16 ft. Maybe not. 17.5 would be mighty small anyway.
If one watches a lot of old fights on YoutTube as I do, one sometimes hears a reference to ring size from the commentator. Indeed it is usually 20 ft. In fact, I cannot think of an instance offhand when it was not 20 ft, though I am sure I have heard reference to a smaller ring in a major fight a few times. I will keep my ears peeled for those.
I would also like to obtain verification of the ring size for Hagler/Leonard. There is a rumor that Ray negotiated for a huge ring, possibly the 24 footer you mention. Anything larger than 20x20 grows quickly larger.
At 21x 21, already a 6.5 ft. square has already been added to the ring. At 22x22, more than a 9x9 that has been added.
At 23 ft. it is more than an 11x11 that has been added.
For the full 24 ft. ring, more than 13x13 square feet have been added to the canvas surface.
It would be interesting to know which of these (if any) was negotiated by Leonard.
*It is an interesting detail that a 16x16 ring would have less than half the square footage of a 24x24 ring! That is a surprise of the numbers.Last edited by The Old LefHook; 03-17-2017, 10:39 AM.

In my original "Ring One" gym I had a 13x13 with a horse hair stuffed flooring with an old boat canvas as a cover.
If you were a mover by the time you got to a fight ring you were the fastest man in the world! If you were a stepper you had the fastest steps around hahahaha!
My second location had an Everlast 20x20 and as we closed sparring to get ready to go to a tourney the last sessions were boxed with the ropes DOWN!
I really dislikes repeating "stay off the ropes"!!! HA!
There were practice portables they were 16x16, they were platforms and pretty lightly made but they could be reinforced. I think they sold for around 700.00 back in the day. My new 20x20 cost me 3,000.00 back in 1975.
My home made 13x13 costs me 80.00 to make hahahaha and it worked great!

For a speedbag that one can use with blade practice, I take the speed bag top section and instead of a bag, I add a shoelace. And if oen takes an old Gi and an old bag, wraps the gi around the bag, one can protect the old bag contents and have a visual aid to targeting.
The training aids that I built are still around because they do not break. lol

Prime Roy Jones would have been too fast of hand and foot for Marciano in a 12 round fight in a normal sized ring.
Make it a 15 rounder in a tiny ring and things get more interesting.

If the fight was held at Cruiserweight, I give the edge to Marciano. He had a bob and weave style that could get him on the inside or get Roy against the ropes. Marciano hit hard and he took the best punches of greats such as Charles and Walcott. It would be difficult for Roy to keep him off of him for 12 or 15 rounds.

Speaking of rings without ropes, there is a boxing form right now that has no ropes. I think they gave it a made up name like "Champiopnship Boxing," or the like, but the form itself is interesting because ropes are such a large part of traditional boxing and their absence creates quite a tactical difference.
One way to make a Mayweather/McGregor match more interesting if it really has to happen, would be to fight in a cage instead of a ring. A man against the cage can barely swing his arms!
Of course Mayweather will call every condition if the fight happens and cannot be expected to give up ropes where he is a master. In fact, it has not even been mentioned that I am aware of, I just think it would make an obvious mismatch a little more interesting, if it has to happen, like I say.
