If Marciano trained so hard, then how come he wasn't over-trained for any fights?

    Over-training absolutely is a thing.

In fact, the whole reason anabolic steroids were synthesized and industrially produced was for that reason!

Exercise is the destruction of cells for the purpose of their being rebuilt into something stronger. Think about meat: it almost always comes from a young animal contained in unnatural conditions so as to prevent that animal from developing its muscles.

The steak you eat doesn't come from a huge raging bull. That meat would be horrible - too tough to be normally eaten.

With athletes there's a lot of factors involved. But it's clear that different experiences and different individuals will yield different results.

I'm not terribly sure that Marciano really did train harder than Charles, or Moore, or anyone else of that era. He certainly didn't have as many fights or as lengthy a career.

It's important to remember that Boxing is about stories. Being an educated adult, one should be able to look through the myth.

Marciano started his career late, and retired young. He had a remarkably short career. And he aborted his comeback against Ingo... so it's pretty clear that he did indeed suffer the ill-effects of intense training.

Another example. Lebron James used to jump 40 to 45 inches in the air to block or save the ball, extending himself and having a risky landing with all his weight and force on one unbalanced foot. For one athlete it's a career ending, life altering injury but for Lebron it was something he walked off without even giving it a second thought.
And yet what is Basketball? Is that even still a sport, or just a game?

I'm not saying LeBron isn't an amazing physical specimen. But there is IS the saying that "the boys play Basketball, while the men Wrestle".

Wrestling is incredibly taxing on the body it destroys you. You can't just be big and good at jumping to succeed. You have to have great physical talent, and a willingness to push mentally well beyond your physical limit.

I can't believe i'm saying this, but I've actually lived more years NOT wrestling than I spent wrestling. But not a week goes by that i'm not in pain. That i'm not reminded of those years on the mat. And that's the same of all the fellas I've known over the years.

Judging by how thick his wrists and forearms are, he actually looked under muscled to me, probably from the immense amount of cardio he did. He also wasn't really an explosive fighter, but he certainly looked heavy handed.

His weight before the computer fight was 255 lbs, I forget how much he cut for that event, I think he was still over 220.
LOL. You're good for entertainment. I'll give you that. Naive and unathletic, but funny.

Dude. We all get fat. I was close to 300 pounds a couple years ago. When my eldest daughter said "Dad, no one wants to see you eat". I had my wake up call. I was almost literally twice my wrestling weight in College.

My brother is a Doctor and he's fat. He looked like Dylan McDermott for years. You've seen his face in the dictionary next to "Lady's Man", but after stealing and with stressful careers guys get fat.

The dudes on your high school Wrestling team... the guys who looked like Adonis... look them up now. See what they look like. Their knees are ****ed. None of them has a healthy back. They all have eating disorders. But they all know it was worth it.

Marciano put on weight because he fooking earned it.

Around here Ezzard Charles is elite. Too bad no one here was around when he was fighting so as to tell him that...

Joe Louis didn't beat any elite Heavyweights. And he sure as Hell didn't beat Charles... he barely bested Walcott.

It is true... Your body just goes fvkall. You spend most of your life working really hard, and then it stops... The pains all kick in, it feels like the body turns on itself. Arthritis, and food... It just is not the same... I remember as a bouncer, all my fellow bouncees put me up to win a bet against our buddy the hot dog seller. Could I eat 8 hot dogs? Back then... I could inhale food! and it tasted so good cause you really needed it!

Now a days? even if I like the taste of something its just not the same... And back then I had no taste for sweets.

            yeah it takes its toll.

Yeah, my oldest brother was a phenomenal athlete. He kinda fu.cked up in college, and decided to enlist in the Army. Probably to piss off my parents. He was by far the most talented and promising of all of us both intellectually and physically. Actually a nice guy, but always a little crazy.

He spent his career jumping out of planes and sh.it like that. My older sister saw him a few years ago, and he can barely walk. It's sad. As much as sitting on a beach all day in Hawai'i can be sad.

I know when I had to lose weight, I had to do all my exercise in the pool or on a bike. Most of it was diet. I used to run for miles, and not really consider it working out. Now, I see these little puzzies my age and older running around who never played sports past high school (if at all) and I realize the nerds were the ones who had it right.

As if that isn't exactly why you were legally prohibited from living near middle schools before moving to the nursing home.
