From the fights I have watched of Gavilan, he is a great counterpuncher but he also had great stamina, a high punch output most fights, deceptive speed and power, a tough chin and was one of the best welterweights ever. Also he had charisma in the ring
2 of the best welterweights ever sharing a ring...why wouldn't I want to see it ?

The KO reigns in boxing. Gavilan had a lot of skill to appreciate, enough that Robby had to settle in and box him and be more careful than usual. Ray learned that the first fight. From what I have read, their two fights seem like carbon copies.
Counterpunchers without a big punch are generally at the top of few viewing lists. You don't cancel work to see a modestly-powered counterpuncher. At least, I wouldn't.
Robinson was not falling into the trap. I'll just box you, then. Not that exciting. To make matters worse, Kid had a great chin. The best thing I can say is that Ray made the right strategic adjustment.
I rate Gavilan high. He probably minces every welterweight in sight today.Last edited by The Old LefHook; 09-01-2016, 02:03 AM.

The truly amazing thing is how much alike Robinson and Gavilan fight, and how much they even look alike. They could play the other guy perfectly in a movie of his life.

Whatever charisma you claim he had outside the bolo punch was not enough to make him a big draw in his time. Well, he was a bit of a draw, but no Robinson. Foremost, he lacked the big punch.

Were Armstrongs 3 title wins filmed in their entirety? I'm pretty sure I've seen film clips of some of those fights but never seen an entire film collection.
