Well Mike Tyson dominated the junior olympics but never went to the olympics and in this case it helped him to jump right into the professional game at a young age. Briggs was not only overmatched physically, but mentally as well.
Yes good points.dont understand why they put him in with Damiani in Italy first fight back.He looked great but got cut.Split with Duva after that fight.

And then Tyson said something that should have sent chills down the spine of all would-be opponents.

"After each fight, I progress a little more," he said. "I'm still an inexperienced fighter. I can get a lot better."

And then you have such idiocy as the comment below,,,,,

"I still feel like I'm a better fighter than Mike Tyson," the defiant Biggs said as blood trickled down his chin and dark glasses covered his swollen eyes. "Tonight, he was better than me, but I don't think he could do this five out of five times.

"His punches weren't that dominating. Jeff Sims hit me with harder punches than that. There was a time in the fight when I told him, 'I thought you punched harder than that.' " T. Biggs
Plenty of fighters say stuff like that. Chuck Liddell lost to Jackson twice and still thought he was better and Ortiz wouldn't admit to being bested so Liddell had to kick his butt a second time. I wouldn't be surprised if Jones said the same thing after one of his losses. Hell, he tried to blame his sub par performance in his win in the first Tarver fight on being weight drained, but still won. I liked it when Tarver asked if Jones had any excuses this second time around.

True but this was 80's boxing at a time where only one skill set was being used....if Tyson wanted you out of there there was about a 95% chance of it happening .

Ty Biggs was a very good amateur boxer with wins over Danianni and Lennox Lewis in championship matches. He had size and was a fluid boxer with good skills too. Unfortunately he kept loosing to the streets and drugs dominated him when he needed to be clean and healthy.
I do think he could have accomplished more than he did if he was able to control himself and focus on his work. He had size and speed and was a decent puncher. At 6'5" 225lbs he had coordination superior to todays big men and a wealth of amatuer experience in meaningful bouts. Shame!
Theres a never ending struggle with so many boxers to leave the streets and their peer pressure behind them. So many great athletes get eaten up by the streets that it wears everyone down that tries to help them. Very sad!

These type of experiences are usually not clean and absolute....sort of like childbirth! I remember seeing my boys being born. With my first boy Cade, I sort of expected a little push, and a clean bald little baby boy. Yikes!!!!! It looked like something out of a Giger painting!!!! Blood and liquids, pieces of this and that and a baby with a slightly lopsided head, covered in the claret.

Well...Drug addiction is the same sort. Its a messy give and take where, the great creator be willing, one breaks free. But it is seldom easy, and there is no doubt that Biggs felt the effects of his addiction well into his career regardless of what he said at any time. what Ray said has a lot to do with it: the company one keeps makes it difficult to make a clean break.

There is a story about Rid**** Bowe, telling a reporter about how his old hood people always hit him up, demanding that he take care of them...he was making the point that he wanted to have a relationship with his people but this made it difficult. And just as he was finishing his sentence a young lady struts up to him and tells the reporter she used to babysit him. She then chastises him yelling at him that he owes her. Biggs no doubt had the same people telling him "come on man lets get down and party, you got some cash? I can score us!"

Well then they should know enough to know that those are a hole hangers on and with all that money, should be able to move out of there.

Great amateur, but not a great pro who might have had a different career if brought up a little slower in the professional ranks and was able to stay away from the drugs and alcohol. Tall boxer with a good reach, but extremely poor defense (which is odd for an accomplished amateur) and seemed to fight off balance whenever he got into any amount of trouble.

I had the opportunity to meet him when he was coming up. He came off as rude and as though he was too good for people. Awhile later I admit I enjoyed the Tyson fight for that reason.
Interesting. How where and when did you meet him ?He seemed to lack confidence to me so im surprised at your impression of him ?
