    Bum of the Month Club

49-0. The greatest defensive fighter ---better than Benitez in the past 40 years. But all we hear is that Mayweather ducked or fought guys past their prime. My question is this.... what champ in the recent past could never be accused of not fighting the best in in a similar weight class? I bring this up after reading an article about Joe Louis and his refusal to fight the top black fighters of his era. Thanks for the feedback

Pacquiao - 5 years past prime

    Berto - 3-3

Cotto - KOd by Pac and Marg

Mosley - ducked him 10 years before the fight happened

Baldomir - slowest welterweight champ ever

De La Hoya - past his prime big time

    Hatton - overblown jr. welterweight

    Ortiz - sucker punch

    Judah - mentally weak

    Marquez - fat lightweight

Canelo - naive clueless kid at the time

I give Floyd Corrales, who is not a top 200 fighter all-time

There is no fighter who can't be accused of avoiding someone. There are too few fights these days & too many contenders/title holders for anyone to fight every best option every time out. Not too mention there are TV channel & promoter affiliations that can make certain fights harder to make when the time is perfect or impossible to make at times.

There is a line between which one can make all fighters victories conditional. You will see Sony do that with Lewis for example. Under these circumstances one would be led to believe that a fighter never beat an opponent without some circumstance that taints the victory and often, the fighters that were not fought become eagles instead of pigeons...so to speak. Then there are legitimate circumstances and legitimate critiscisms that should be considered. All these circumstances are debatable.

The problem that Floyd runs into is partially circumstance and partially perhaps his own doing. floyd never defeated an ATG in his prime...make of that what one will it is a fact. Was it floyd's doing? thats debatable. He certainly could have fought Pac earlier. Roy Jones who, on paper can look shabby, did at least defeat some guys who are considered great fighters in their prime.

With the heavyweights its a bit different because they cannot really fight in different weight classes. Louis could not challenge for a middle weight title, guys can only move up to challenge him. You sometimes get a time when the heavyweight division is really strong, and that even comes together at times when there is a dominant champ. But circumstances are what they are.

"Bum of the Month Club" had nothing to do with him avoiding black fighters at all, most of them were top 10 Heavyweights that he was blowing away, what boxers did the article refer to him as avoiding ?.

............."I bring this up after reading an article about Joe Louis and his refusal to fight the top black fighters of his era"........

                What article did you read?
How are you defining "Bum"? I ask because its incorrectly used on this forum.

What would Floyd fighting men past their primes have anything to do with a "bum"?

For the hundredth time here, a bum is a fighter who on a particular night refusses to fight up to his potental!

Its not a lesser talented man loosing to a more talented one.

It has NOTHING to do with talent level and skills its everything about mind set.
Theres been great fighters who have had nights when they acted like bums!

Bum of the Month as in what boxing writers called the start of Louis' title reign in 39' - 41', the thread starter isn't calling anyone a bum it's just a fact and a famous one at that, it's a misconception because most of who he was knocking away were top contenders but it's what that time is always referred to as. Thought you would've known this.

Joe Louis's "bum of the month" happened AFTER the contenders were disposed of.
Boxers back then fought often and fighting an opponent not a contender happened all the time. You got to eat!
