agreed, I would also throw in the Oakland A's team during the late 60's...Great team indeed. Morgan was dull as a player also! those guys never dropped the ball, or failed to get the hit needed.... I stopped watching baseball when the modern era of free agency made a situation where a team of ringers could be bought. Also Baseball is such a mess now that usually the weaker teams get hot in the playoffs and win everything.

Remember the series where the Cardinals played the royals and the rotund first baseman (Balboni) who hit like 201 for the year went on a tear and won it for the Royals? (Palm slap) that did it for me. The modern era has great players and ****ty teams.

Entire teams of ringers don't win championships though. You need role players who can bunt, hit sac flies and move base runners over. The Yankees in the early aughts proved that. I remember Balboni with the Yankees in the late '80s to about 1990. Kind of looked like Mario from Super Mario Bros. Couldn't run too fast, but could hit the ball hard. I remember him hitting a game tying grand slam at Yankee Stadium in 1990 in a game the Yanks later won. I remember I was on my way to see the movie Disorganized Crime and heard the result afterwards, but got to hear the homer on the radio before I went in to see it.

Outside of boxing, I always found Joe Morgan really dull. I mean, he knows the fundamentals of baseball, but there was no excitement in his commentary. Ditto for Bob Costas. If you see a slugfest, a big knockout win or game winning home run, you should at least sound SOMEWHAT excitied. Jon Sterling here in New York has much better energy calling Yankee games on the radio, but has really lost it the last few years as he's gone WAY too far with catch phrases and the need to try and come up with clever nicknames for the players. It was one thing to occasionally hear The Bamtino or Bern Baby Bern, but now it's just excessive with The Grandy Man, El Capitan or the worst, saying he sent a Text Message when Mark Texiera hits a home run or "you're on the Mark Texeira. Suzyn Waldman is horrible too, love it when Opie and Anthony, as well as Craig Carton made fun of her.

Man, I'm glad I mostly watch fights and New York Giants games these days. Bob Papa is just average on HBO's Boxing After Dark, but is much better doing the Giants games on the radio here in New York.

Just out of curiosity, what has Joe Buck said that sounds smug? I only used to see him a little during Yankee playoff games. I found him dull as well.

And as for annoying, Chris Berman on ESPN baseball games, also a need for clever nicknames, along with **** Vitale. Loved it when O&A interviewed him years ago on satellite radio and had him thinking they weren't on the air yet, so the listeners could get an idea of how different he was on and off air.
