Dispelling the myth about the "rope-a-dope" (Rumble In The Jungle)

A lot of people (including Mayweather who's said this himself) have the misconception that Ali laid on the ropes and took a pounding and let George Foreman punch himself out before capitalising on his tiredness. However, this excellent case study will reveal the truth and genius of Ali and his guile to execute his extensive game plan perfectly. It analyses Ali's tactics, footwork, how he rolled with the punches and defence etc.

Its like Raven just said...If Ali had taken Foreman flush he would have been looking up from the floor.

The Rope-a-Dope is fiction, Muhammad Ali never lay on the ropes soaking up punches from Big George. Ali slipped, ducked, dodged punches in the center of the ring, he punched George every time George was in range. Ali executed his game plan to perfection... Rope-a-dope was made up once the bout was all over, it is fiction and never happened. George is the guy who pushes the Rope-a-dope line. But George is a Bull***ter

This is not true, yes Ali slipped punches, threw beautiful counters and at times out worked Foreman but from the 3rd round to the 6th, Ali was leaning back on the ropes A LOT. There is footage of Ali's corner, of Dundee and Bundini literally shouting, no, pleading Ali to "stay off the ropes". Just listen to the commentary, both British and American, the commentators themselves are worried that Ali is taking too many punches while backed against the ropes.

However, it wasn't all rope-a-dope, especially in the first round when Ali was the aggressor but he realised pretty quickly, in the second round, that he would not be able to keep that up for 15 rounds. It was impossible against a guy as young and dangerous as Foreman. Plus Ali said after the Foreman-Norton fight "drag George past the 4th rounds and he'll get tired", it's the advice he gave Norton. Ali had the recuperative powers and the chin to pull that plan off. No one else did.

Idiotic. The rope-a-dope happened. A few elements may have been enlarged and fictionalized. The forking thing happened, for Christ's sake. We have eyes. Of course he fought back, of course he punched Foreman a lot, of course he dodged and deflected a lot of punches, of course there was a lot of activity that was not rope-a-dope.. Duh, now pick up your bags and depart for hell, anyone who says it never happened

i would love to see the punch stats for the fight, because i would guess Foreman never landed more than double figures in any round of the fight.

Ali rarley got tagged with solid punches ,mostly missed and elbow blocked the ones that did land were while ali was bouncing off the ropes...what MYTH is there ,the rope a dope was basically the fight, after that as someone stated foreman was punched out and ali took over, not sure why this is even debatable? Its on video?

Actually, it's a bad vid, just an example of how to distort the truth by cutting together scenes which justifies the view the maker wants to foist on people.

Like all these fake vids that "prove" that astronauts never have walked on the moon.

Ali has in his biography clearly described how Foreman forced him to 'invent the rope-a-dope' strategy during the fight to survive it.
