  • Harold Johnson 1928-2015

With all the talk about Pac-May, this story got buried in the boxing news. Still it is disgraceful that there is nothing on ESPN Boxing that even acknowledges it.

Johnson was a Hall of Famer and in any credible top 20 all time lightheavyweight list. He was an outstanding champion who fought all the top names in a great era for that weight class. He had wins over Archie Moore, Ezzard Charles, Jimmy Bivins, Eddie Machen, and Doug Jones.

Johnson stayed out of the boxing spotlight for many years after retiring. 87 years isn't too bad for a guy who had 87 professional fights.

And without any doubt a Top 10 LHW.

Well I was hoping you would Dan, but it needed to be posted. And I personally share your high opinion of him. But if I'm really being honest, I thought he had passed years ago. He really stayed under the radar. When you hear the usual names tossed out as the greatest lightheavies (Spinks, Foster, Charles, Loughran, Moore, Conn, etc.), you rarely hear his.

I learned a lot about him just from reading your post about him. It's surprising that his name doesn't come up more often.

I would not have known if you didn't post this Scott. Thanks.

Had him listed in an ATG LHW list I made some time back.

Can't believe I didn't hear about it till now. Top, top fighter, I urge everyone who hasn't, to watch his fight films.
