Who was P4P the greatest amateur boxer ever?

Anyone follow amateur boxing much? I think it would be a battle between Papp, Stevenson, Savon, Rigondeaux and Lomachenko.

As an Amatuer Champion Howard Davis won multiple "Outstanding Boxer" awards in his career the most prestigious being in the 1976 Olympics.
In National finals he had wins over Prior & Hearns and was one of the fleetest of foot along with his hands speed was unmatched at that time.
I don't think he was THE best ever but the era he fought in was highly competitive and he was outstanding in multiple major competitions.

I saw him before he was an open class fighter and everyone knew he was going to be the best. As a pro his style didn't translate well because the amateur style wasn't predicated on power it was all about hit & not get hit for 3 rds.
He was outstanding during his amateur career time!

      Ray.

Maybe fought a bit like the later pro Derrick Gainer, RJJ's old protoge. Davis could probably pinch flies out of the air with his thumb and forefinger.

Ariel Hernandez for me. The guy was sheer frightening.

2 time olympic gold medalist, 2 time world champion, 7 national titles destroying the likes of Chris Byrd, Sven Ottke, Jorge Gutierrez, Juan Hernandez Sierra and so on.
Such a shame there is so limited footage available he was a ****ing animal.
Picture a middleweight Rigondeaux, better offensively with savage one punch power.

Really depends on what you class greatness on - record, performance, level of dominance, distinguishing factors (such as lots of KOs in the ams)...really difficult to say.

I'd say Loma but that's just because he was my favourite amateur, and obviously because of his crazy record. But it's all down to opinion and what criteria you want to take into account.

All three were incredible. I remember Vernon Forrest talking about how great Tszyu was as an amateur.

Breland's record and dominance was amazing 110-1.

Jones was brilliant and the Olympic judges robbed him of
one of the best Olympic runs ever.

That is tough question, but a good one. I think when you talk about the best of all time you have to start looking at the Cuban boxers.

Outside of the heavies Mark Breland was one of the few amateurs I saw knock guys out cold consistently...Usually you see referee stoppages in the amateurs but Breland was scoring legitimate 10count KO's...
