  • Lewis vs Tyson

Most Lennox Lewis fans look on this fight as the crowning moment of Lewis career. Let's take a brief look at the facts, then discuss the fight and decide should it have taken place.

Mike Tyson had fought 6 fights in 5yrs lasting a total of 18rds. against mediocre opposition. Tyson was reported to have blown-up to over 285lbs after defeating Brian Nielsen 8 months previous. Tyson was taking prescription anti-depressants and was addicted to alcohol, ******* and cannabis.

Lewis was defending his remaining two title belts. after being stripped of his WBA belt for refusing to fight long time No1 contender John Ruiz.

The fight had to be staged in Memphis Tennessee due to Tyson's drug addiction, as he would fail a drugs test in every other state in the U.S.

Lewis would only go ahead with the fight on the condition, 12 security officers cordoned off the ring during the introductions. This so that Tyson could not eye-ball Lewis and give him diarrhea, and there was no referee's instructions and touch gloves in the middle of the ring.

The fight itself was a no-show from Mike Tyson who was clearly a shot` fighter. Emmanuel Stewart said to Lewis in the corner after round one, "if you could only see how bad he looks, You would be surprised"...

Should this fight have taken place?
Should Lewis have pushed for this fight?
    Was Mike Tyson shot?
Was the fight a career defining fight for Lewis?

    Of course he was shot.

    That's not debatable.

It was a worthless win and yet some people list it on LL resume.

It's just as "career defining" as Ali vs Holmes or Louis vs Marciano...

Lewis has much better wins than a shot Tyson.

I think Lewis vs Vitali was one of the best fights for Lennox. Vitali stepped in as a last minute opponent "imagine" for that fight. Lennox was not in the best of shape as he was trying to get $$$ for a rematch with Tyson but that fight was declined by Tyson after the fight which is the topic of this thread. SO instead of fighting the HW cash cow TYSON at the time he finished out his contract with HBO and took on Vitali for a WAR!!! I saw Lewis take some hard right hands in that fight and dig down deep to hang in there with Vitali for some otugh rounds. I think that was one of his best wins. I would say Vitali was the best HW post Lewis retirement.

Lewis went `All Out`for a second fight with Tyson. But it was virtually impossible to "get the fight sanctioned" due to Mike Tyson's Drug Dependency/Addiction. Lewis then boasted how he would have,"One brother for breakfast, the other brother for Tea". Vitali the weaker of the two brother was first and Lewis very nearly came unstuck. Lewis then ran off into retirement with his trousers full of brown, at the thought of Wladimir!

In the mentioned Lewis-Vitali bout, Lewis was actually supposed to fight Kirk Johnson but Johnson was injured. Just in case anyone forgot.

You know....All the Lewis haters forget this constantly. Lewis was in horrible shape because it was a fight against a small slow powder puff punching opponent.
