That a very interesting comment about athlete's thinking there era was better a lot of that can be contributed to ego. Ray Arcel having a career training that span from the 20's thru the late 80's is another matter altogether. I have only read one book on mr Arcel and he named the top 15 fighters of all time and it did include Duran and some of the latter day fighters. He was very complementary of Dempsey and Louis having trained many of his victims. He also had great respect for Jack Blackburn joes trainer. He excluded Gene Tunney from his top 15 for what I perceived were personal reasons.

To me the opinion of someone like Arcel who trained champions in so many eras holds a lot of value.
He had a front row seat to many of the great boxers and boxing matches throughout his career and was thus in a good position to be able to compare fighters from different times.

But seriously. And most of the multi generational guys seem very sure about their choices....its not like they have to think a lot. Dempsey gets many accolades which really makes me think. Obviosly those guys know what they are talking about. While most people can see Johnson Lewis or Ali, Dempsey to quite a few pundits was considered better...and we are talking not even close.
