That a very interesting comment about athlete's thinking there era was better a lot of that can be contributed to ego. Ray Arcel having a career training that span from the 20's thru the late 80's is another matter altogether. I have only read one book on mr Arcel and he named the top 15 fighters of all time and it did include Duran and some of the latter day fighters. He was very complementary of Dempsey and Louis having trained many of his victims. He also had great respect for Jack Blackburn joes trainer. He excluded Gene Tunney from his top 15 for what I perceived were personal reasons.

I think all trainers and boxers will include a lot of personal stuff in their valuations. For example i'm pretty sure that Gil Clancy never thought well of Monzon. Of course the fact that his fighters kept losing to Monzon had something to do with his estimation. In fact Clancy thinks both Griffith and Valdez deserved decisions over him, which shows how blinkered a trainers vision can be about things that directly relate to them.

Everyone is different I suppose plus some fighters rub opponents and their trainers up the wrong way. Look at Malignaggi, he gives respect to Hatton, Cotto and Khan for whipping his ass but hints that Porter is a drugs cheat and pretends that he defeated Broner and also claims that Broner is not very good. Just good enough to beat him I suppose.

To me the opinion of someone like Arcel who trained champions in so many eras holds a lot of value.

He had a front row seat to many of the great boxers and boxing matches throughout his career and was thus in a good position to be able to compare fighters from different times.

Psssst. A mere novice when compared to Elroy and the evolution brigade.

But seriously. And most of the multi generational guys seem very sure about their choices....its not like they have to think a lot. Dempsey gets many accolades which really makes me think. Obviosly those guys know what they are talking about. While most people can see Johnson Lewis or Ali, Dempsey to quite a few pundits was considered better...and we are talking not even close.
