Ironic but I started subscribing to the Ring about five months after that issue. I never seen that issue before but personally I never embraced women's boxing, as they say "each to their own". But I would never would have cancelled my subscription back then over them acknowledging their role in the sport.

In 1979, then?
I don't have that many of my old Ring mags left, but for some reason, I still remember most of the covers over the years.

That year, '79, Bert Sugar took over from Nat Loubet and the magazine had a new look as of the October issue.
I still think The Ring reached its peak under Sugar's editorship.

My favorite punch on the Ring list is Jelena Mrdjenovich knocking out Olivia Gerula in their rubber match for the WBC super feather title, leaving Gerula out cold for several minutes. Mrdjenovich had won on a 4th-round stoppage in their first meeting, while Gerula gained an unanimous decision in their second encounter.
(And yes, I do feel a bit perverted, recommending others to watch a vid when a human being has her brain blown into pieces.)

Actually, Holly Holm didn't return to boxing, she's still in MMA, just signed with the UFC. She should win a few more fights there, is 7-0 so far with 6 KO wins. Not sure how she'd do against Rousey, Zingano or Cyborg, who it's also rumored they'll soon sign as well.

It was Holly Holm getting brutalized. She was p4p no. 1 at the time. Mathis just killed her there.

Holm later got revenge and continued her career in MMA despite having a lucrative fight against Cecilia Brækhus lined up.

I think she is heading back to boxing now.

She's not heading back to boxing now and probably never will again.

Holm is scheduled to make her debut in the UFC soon. The plan is to eventually match her up against Ronda Rousey, if everything goes according to plan then all parties involved will make a ton of money.

In that issue they did an history of the light heavyweight division, champion by champion. Great stuff!

And I do remember the heated discussion about Coetzee's bionic right hand, which some thought gave him an unfair advantage while it likely was the other way around.

I liked Coetzee, a more pleasant man than his compatriot Kallie Knoetze.

How about that – the facetious four have agreed on this one:

WBA welterweight title
WBC welterweight title
IBF welterweight title
WBO welterweight title
Apparently, all four were able to pilfer some money of the boxers’ purses
(for doing what? – buying ch’ship belts at Wal-Mart to hand over?)

Well, if not to the low four, so my respect to the combatants.

Some days she feels better, some days she doesn’t.
Last Sept., Frida Wallberg was taken to the emergency hospital because of severe headaches.

15 months after losing her WBC super featherweight title by an 8th-round kayo, she is still suffering from the loss. And according to doctors, her pain may be permanent.

I mentioned it before here, that ex-light heavy champ Freddie Mills suffered of daily headaches the last 15 years of his life.

And it makes me wondering how many ex-boxers – who never reached the top and because of that were quickly forgotten – are going through the same hell every day …
