Yes, Thomas Hauser, Bert Sugar (RIP), that old English fella from The Sun who I can't remember, Kevin Mitchell in the UK (not the boxer)...I think that's about it. There are some more obscure writers from the golden age of boxing, I wonder what they'd make of all this.

I quite like Merchant too, the guy knows more about boxing than most of you will ever know but he gets disrespected a lot on here, maybe its cos he spent a decade asking Floyd questions he didn't have an answer to.

    Yahoo is often quite bad.

But the May/Maidana fight is unfair, 99% of human beings thought Floyd would school him, yes there was a chance of an upset due to Maids power but nothing more. The Maidana we saw last week came in like a wrecking ball and it was immense to watch but I'm not sure if he can duplicate that performance.
What about on TV? I guess the most trusted would be Max Kellerman and Al Bernstein? What about Teddy Atlas, who calls boxing Friday nights in between NFL seasons on ESPN 2?

Atlas is ok, I think he just likes the sound of his own voice tbh.

Kellerman isn't brave enough, he always just seems to be sucking up to the major guys and his post fight interviews are boring.

Bernstein I respect, does some segments on Channel 5 too.

Its not the writers its the process of making a list....You will always leave a few put because there are not ten guys who are the best....there is a guy who is the best SRR and there are some guys who will be in every list....and thats all one can say.

Have any of you rubes looked at Hopkins resume? to play devil's advocate for a moment.....it aint too bad! I mean a case could perhaps be made for Hopkins somewhere near the top 20....that I could see

besides my old friend wenierschmaltz has a great list:

        1) Vlad Kltischko
        2) his brother
        nobody else comes close!!!!

        11) Andrew Golata

          Everyone got one....................................a list too!

Try to develop an "eye" for skills and over all talent instead of just reading records and trying to figure what common opponents actually mean.

It's not just about won/loss records it's much more about talent and experiences!

Then factor in the will to win, to dominate and halt the opponent!!!

          here's my list of the very best ever;

          Sugar Ray Robinson 1st!

being second or fifth just doesn't cut it!!
          Ray.

There is a top 5 Holy Grail -

            Robinson/Greb/Armstrong/Charles/Langford

Then - Ali, Duran, Benny Leonard, Gans, Louis, Pep, Moore, Walker, etc. how ever you want to arrange them.

Name me the fighters that Benny beat that were as good as Duran, hearns, benetiz... There is no one on his resume as good as any of those guys,, even slightly past prime Duran is better than the guys Benny beat..

Youre not being serious. He has 2 wins over Britton and Lewis

They're far and away greater welterweights than those guys.

                      Interesting thread!

I tried to google Dan Jones - and was surprised to find that he is only 32 years old! Apparently his main area of interest is British history and boxing isnt even mentioned in his Wikipedia profile.

Im not suggesting that he knows nothing about boxing and I have no idea if he is considered a boxing "historian" whose opinion is highly valued. But having followed that other thread where the topic is best resumes of all time... im a little bit surprised to see his all-time top 10 where we find Greb all the way down in 8th place! And no mention at all of Sam Langford - who some people here apparently believe should at least be in the top 5!

So I was wondering if there are knowledgeable/respected (again, im not saying Dans opinion shouldnt be respected) historians out there who have published their own personal p4p top-10. If so, I would like to see some of those - just to see how they compare to the one Dan has come out with.
