    This is the answer:
    Muhammad Ali
    Mike Tyson

Anyone who says anything different is wrong.

Muhammad Ali and I don't even think it's debatable. Ali could be recognized and followed anywhere in the world. Not just the United States.

        It's Ali, of course.

One of the most famous athletes of all time. He might very well have been the most popular person on the planet at his professional peak. Ali was an icon of his time, transcended the sport. That is where true greatness lies.

Ali in the modern age, and Louis & Dempsey before world media.

Ali had the most political power hands down. Changed the sport and transcended it. Not a question who the most popular fighter ever was.

Many people despised Ali. Almost everyone liked Joe Louis. So yes, there is a question.

you stole my thunder. Absolutely correct. Ali's popularity came after he retired. Back in the late 60s and early 70s most people tuned in hoping he would lose

Meh.. beg to differ. Yah Ali was hated more, but he also had much more people tuned in watching him and talking his name than Louis did. Boxing wasn't as prevalent in Louis's day as it was by the time Ali's day came along

Rumble in the jungle?? Non boxing fans knew who Ali was, he's in the league of most famous person not just boxer in the modern era. He dint just get famous afterwards, there were loads of interviews of him where they mentioned him as being the most famous man on the planet. Tyson was a superstar but it would be hard to find anyone that doesn't know the name Muhammad Ali

I thought Ali started to become less hated and more popular by the mid '70s when more people in America agreed on his views on the Vietnam were and more people started protesting it.
