  • Must Read-Don King

Truly a great read. Found this somwhere on the internet but really captures the life and times of the one time most influential man in America and displays the last glimpse we may see of Don King productions.

What do you find so interesting about this piece? it is well written but it does not tell us anything new about King.

Guys like King are survivors...Richard Millhouse Nixon is another crook that kept coming back for more. Its an interesting slant on the media fed public that we look at an 80 year old man and assume he should still be relevant at what amounts to being a young man's game, that of a hustler. Hustlers are not all bad...King's cross to bear is his greed and selfishness. His racial animosity is underhanded...he did more harm to black people than the the most determined rascist could ever hope to. Arum and King are cut from the same cloth...These guys are pathological...its second nature to try to control, take and destroy....I doubt either man has ever really thought about how an exploited boxer could be their kid or grandkid.

What I resent about this piece is the assumption that enough is enough. Arum is also getting forced out by the younger set, but since when is a leech in any way shape or form, spoken of as having to get back in the game....between the two of them with their resources Arum and King should be giving something back...their promotions are not good for fighters! The public should view both of these pathological sociopaths as needing to be retired...good riddance Don, enjoy those Rolls with the knowledge that the last time you tried to shake Iron Mike's hand he almost belted you.

Nobody cares about the aspects of King shared, they are all common knowledge. Yes King is smart...Yes King is himself a tom always ready to talk about the white establishment as giving him a chance, yet always bitter because in Don's world the reason he is so gratioutously thrown on the trash heap of Florida is because once a ni44a always a ni44a...never mind the actions that caused him to more or less be thrown out of boxing.

The only good thing about King is that Arum is shaping up to be worse. I have to wonder if King might step aside for some cash if it meant letting a friend fight Floyd...

Yea of course Don King is wolf in a sheep's clothing and is nothing more then the devil himself. But even though Don King and Bob Arum are survivors that doesn't mean they can beat father time. The once ruler of the boxing world is no more and Bob Arum's years are numbered too considering his age. I don't believe Arum's Top Rank will win this cold war with Mayweather Promotions and Goldenboy. I just hope this next generation of boxing doesn't turn Golden Boy and Mayweather Promotions into what we hate most about Don King and Arum. But Bottom line though Don King is done and Arum is still on top for while it last. Arum is an adapter, Don King isn't to the extent of what Arum was able to do up this far in the future.

If you want some deep insight into King get the book "Only in America: The life and crimes of Son King". That boom will make you hate and respect him at at the very same time.

Don King is still one of the most interesting men in boxing, a rarity in modern sport, an outsider who made millions, hundreds of millions. But at the end of it all, he was a liar, selfish, a murderer and a conman, he destroyed more lives than he fixed and he pulled the greatest con of all, by allowing the people, who were having their lives systematically destroyed, be in on it all from the beginning.

Smart and dangerous, that is, was and always will be Don King.

For all that, he knew how to do business and he knew that everything within boxing must be business and never be personal. Many guys who have only followed boxing post-Oscar/Floyd think the TMT/GBP V TR feud is huge but it's nothing compared to what Arum and King wen through in the 70s, 80s and 90s yet both men found a way to worth through that and put on some of the biggest fights in history.

Hell, with idiots like Schaefer and Mayweather in charge of boxing in first half of the new millennium, would we have ever seen Tyson/Lewis??? Lewis was contracted to HBO and Tyson with Showtime yet King was influential in getting both networks to work together, putting on the biggest PPV in history.

Arum was just lucky and he is going down fast, they are forcing him out. But again...these guys are old, why would they want to do this? its strange to talk like these guys are 50 years old an anachronism haha.

Yeah you are so right....Lets see if the next generation has ethics and morals. Good point we can only hope.

Fascinating guy. Apparently his wife was like his handler! And King, no matter what one thinks about him was a real G. The people he went up against in Cleveland make the little baby wrappers trying to look hard, look like petulent children. King was basically in the middle of an old gangster with bucu muscle, sociopaths with bombs splattering people randomly, and other assorted guys trying to make the climb...and he persevered! I honestly believe that making it as a promoter in boxing one is dealing with some of the more dangerous types...guys life fifty cents never have a chance...but to KING? they were guppies to be swallowed whole.

Arum is still much on top. Top Rank has a lot of the better fighters and even Robert Guererro is supposebly trying to leave Golden Boy for Top Rank.

I didn't read it because I know too much about King already. He did a lot of bad things but at the same time did a lot for boxing. Scruples where not his way.
