  • Help settle this Top 10 debate

My cousin and I are huge life long boxing fans, and have been watching since we were kids in the 80s.. We recently started talking about the top 10 guys we have ever seen fight.. We couldnt narrow it down to 10, so i thought i would put up our list of viable options, and see what the great posters of the history section have to say..
And something that stuck out at me, is everyone i will list, can be lumped into a group or with another rival like ying and yang..

    1.hagler
    2.SRL
    3.hearns
    4.duran

    5.pernel
    6.chavez

    7.roy jones
    8.james toney

    9.holyfield
    10.tyson
    11.lewis

    12.floyd
    13.manny

    14.morales
    15.barrera

    16.ricardo lopez

    17. holmes
    18. spinks

    20. hopkins
any others that im not naming, please throw them in,, but try and narrow down the list to only 10 fighters

our starting point is the early 80s

      From 1980-now?

      Gomez and Nelson?

Lots of fighters who were active in the 80s who were great like Argeullo, Benitez but did their best work before 1980.

      My top 10 would be something like this;

      1. Roberto Duran
      2. Ray Leonard
      3. Pernell Whitaker
      4. Roy Jones Jr
      5. Evander Holyfield
      6. Marvin Hagler
      7. Tommy Hearns
      8. Floyd Mayweather
      9. Mike McCallum
      10. Manny Pacquaio

      No Chavez, wasn't expecting that.

I wouldn't have been so generous to Mayweather.

          umm something like this ...

          1. Duran
          2. Leonard
          3. hearns
          4. Hagler
          5. Jones jnr
          6. Pernell
          7. Pacquiao
          8. Tyson
          9. floyd
          10. Holyfield
          11. Chavez
          12. Lewis
          13. Toney
          14. Hopkins

I dunno ... not a very good list as I haven't thought about it too long. We should put the lists together for a definitive top ten lol

                Arguello and Benitez..

I'm aware that both of these fighters peaked in the 70's and began to fade at the start of the 80's.. But that's when I first got into boxing, and they were still too good for most..

Brings me to Pryor?....... Surely not!

arguello, benetiz, gomez are all great candidates, but we didnt get to watch them life in their prime as much as the others, they kinda were on the downhill once we started watching

Pryor is close but no cigar,, He just doesnt have the longevity and most of his big wins were vs aged fighters on the downhill

First of all, this (or any other) top 10 debate will never be "settled." Otherwise, forums like this will cease to exist, let alone thrive. That said, unranked are my top 10 of the post-Ali (to present) era:
                    • Alexis Arguello
                    • Rid**** Bowe*
                    • Julio César Chavez
                    • Roberto Durán
                    • Marvin Hagler
                    • Thomas Hearns
                    • Larry Holmes
                    • Ray Leonard
                    • Aaron Pryor
                    • Mike Tyson

                    *Unmentioned until now.
