Correct me if i'm wrong, but is'nt that how the smw division came about?
Was'nt it invented, so that SRL could become the first man to win titles in 5 different weights?.. Pretty sure Lalonde was made to come in at 168, but still had to put his wbc lhwt title on the line.
The weight limit for Leonard-Lalonde was actually 167, which makes it an even bigger joke as an alleged lightheavyweight title fight.

Michael Sprott vs Edmund Gerber last year was pretty bad although Sprott hit the ground like a sack of ****.
Johnny Nelson vs Carl Thompson was pretty bad, similar to Groves stoppage.

Yes, Leonard had everyone dancing to his tune.. 167!.. What was that all about.. My only guess - to make sure Lalonde came in as weak as possible

Exactly. That's what makes it a cherry pick.

Lalonde fought alot of his career at super middleweight but rose to 175 for a title shot. He had a choice and decided to go for the payday and fight a rusty welterweight. It was his choice. Lalonde was still the favorite to beat Leonard. Before the fight, at the weigh in after Leonard weighed in, Lalonde seen Leonard's weight and stated, "looks like I am fighting a fat welterweight". Leonard had the last laugh because after weighing he pulled rolls of quarters out of his pockets. Leonards real weight was well under 160.

              Ernesto Marcel against Roberto Duran.

Marcel should have been allowed to go the distance. The stoppage was very weird. It was not like Marcel took a horrible beating in there. Sure, he was tired, but he never stopped trying.

Dokes was beating Weaver, but that was a quick stoppage. Weaver was blocking a lot of shots.

Joey Curtis was the referee, and for many subsequent fights, fans booed him loudly.

Another ref with a bad reputation for showy quick stoppages was Richard Steele (Chavez-Taylor among others).

Harris-Matthysse was another quickie, with Gelasio Huerta the referee.

You want a ref who starts by saying, "They came here to watch you fight, not me referee."

                    - -Dokes vs Weaver 1 a good call, but...

While Steele was evaluating a done Taylor who looked like a truck ran over him, Duva was on the ring apron screaming as the arena was in full eruption mode.

Taylor unresponsive, so does Steele call a Ko or a DQ loss for Taylor because of dumb Duva?

A loss is a loss no matter the pick as well as dum fans always gonna moan over that which they know not.

True, the Taylor-Chavez fight sparked a lot of controversy and debate. Richard "Punch and Get Out!" Steele seemed to insert himself into too many of them, though.

Not sure if Curtis lived down the Weaver stoppage.

Fighters don't help matters when they suddenly get wide-eyed with the "why did you stop it, I'm fine" look.

We're talking about in the heat of the moment, and the ref IS up close, but I think there should be a little more warning. Within reason, the ref can do "walk to me" after a KO.

Dicier is when the fighter hasn't gone down, and is on the ropes, maybe covering up a little too long.

The standing 8 count doesn't seem to be used much anymore, but a standing 3 might be the answer; just enough time to let the fighter and the fans know that the TKO is coming.

If the fighter is dazed he won't know the difference and taking one more punch even on gloves in front of his face will be the end, but if he does have his senses he'll instantly prove he's still in the fight.

I know...as Steele said, and refs always do, it's better to stop early and have a re-match than stop late, but when IS late?

We see from the Adonis Stevenson fight or Zab Judah, a fighter can seem to have been saved, and even want to continue, only to collapse 30 seconds or a minute later.
