  • What is Jerry Quarry Famous for?

    I looked through his record, he lost to essentially every good fighter he fought against, except Floyd Patterson. At one point, someone told me he had a good chin. But he got stopped a lot, even against Chuvalo. So is his claim to fame being "The Great White Hope"? Because even then, Chuvalo was white, Joe Bugner was white, there were a few prominent white boxers in this era. What makes him stand out

    Quarry was more talented than the other white guys you mentioned. He had a certain charisma to him and his wins over Foster and Lyle at MSG were very impressive at the time. The Chuvalo KO loss was flukish, but Quarry often did seem like a jinxed fighter.

      Jerry was famous for the charisma, his come forward **** you out fighting style and for fighting virtually every top heavyweight form the 60s to mid 70s.

      Everybody now a days is looking for that "0" to quantify a so called great fighter, but I remember when you were called a great fighter if you fought great against the best opposition available, win or lose.

      And that my friend was Irish Jerry Quarry.

      Edit: And Jerry Quarry is Rodger Mayweather Favorite "white" fighter. LoL True story

      Double Edit: I remember the episode of "I Dream of Jeannie" with Jerry Quarry, Damn I loved Barbara Eden!

        Gerry Quarry - Famous for being a warrior in the ring.

        Took it to a prime Earnie Shavers, and walked straight through him.. Shavers did'nt last a round.

          yea,,,quarry lost his share but he also beat some good fighters in a very tough era. definitely one of the better fighters to never win a world title. he didn't pad his record with soft touches like fighters do today. he fought tough opponents from the very start of his career whicxh is why he doesn't have that glossy record

            ..."lost to EVERY good fighter he faced".....;

            Spenser
            Paterson
            Lyle
            Mathis
            Foster
            Middleton
            Shavers..............he beat these fellows and they were ALL "good fighters"!

            He lost to;
            Ali (2)
            Frazier (2)
            Chuvalo
            Norton..............all contenders.

            You need to realize their were fellows throughout the history of boxing who were very good competitors who never made to championship status.
            Because you don't know them doesn't mean they never exsisted, study up!

              You must be thinking of Bobby Quarry.

              Seriously I have heard it said many times that if Jerry Quarry fought in an era without an Ali or a Frazier he might have been a champion.

                he was a HW in the late 60's and early 70's, dog.....

                that division was the most famous collection of athletes on the planet at the time. it's the best HW division ever, and quarry was a contender.

                  don't let any ribbing get to you, its a good question. As others have said Quarry fought at an elite level...even if he was not at that level enough to win the championship.

                  Heres a good way to understand Quarry though: He is the cloth from which guys like Gatti, Cobb were cut from. I personally think that Quarry was better and that given his death from the cause....he may qualify as a patron saint to the likes of guys who are truly badasses! and I mean that in a complimentary way.

                    Most top heavyweights from the 70's are famous or at the very least well known. Quarry was a top heavyweight who also had some big victories.

                    Aside from that, he was charismatic and articulate enough to have done other big th things after boxing if not for the damage he suffered and the residual effects.

                    His boxing commentary was top notch.
