  • mike mccallum vs bernard hopkins

you do you think was the better fighter between the 2

  • #2
Both ATG's, probably have Hopkins higher but it's debatable. Not really thought about it.

Would have been a great fight both in their primes.

RubenSonny would be good for this conversation he'd make a great case for McCallum.

yeah,, im really stuck on this,, i could make a case for either guy,,

hopkins is alittle more famous and will probably go down in history more highly regarded

but if they were to fight, i think it looks alot like toney-mccallum

TBH I think its McCallum clearly, and I think he would beat Hopkins at MW. As an ATG Hopkins is on the lower end, his competition is so far away from McCallums.

I think one can make a case McCallum beat better Middleweights from Graham through being stripped prior to Toney I than Hopkins did his whole reign at 160. I don't think Hopkins gets 20 in the class that came up after Hagler with guys like Mike, Nunn, Toney etc. I don't think any Middleweight in history could have posted a defense record run in that era. It's like the 40s or 20s...just too deep not to lose somewhere even for guys who mostly won.

It would be a fascinating fight. Hopkins, when he really started to hit peak and combine superlative defense with offense (I think his prime really starts around 97) would have been hell for Mike. He moved well and could box with his feet as well as his fists. Movement could trouble McCallum and Hopkins was capable of giving him fits the way Kalambay did twice. Conversely, McCallum had the sort of precise volume that could trouble Hopkins. He wouldn't let Hopkins dictate the pace for 12. It's an even fight between geniuses.

Mike was way better schooled than Hopkins, but Hopkins is more cerebral....he tries to out-think you to a win.

Very good match up. The only problem with Hopkins resume is hes such a talented fighter with his excellent in ring IQ and in hos prime had a great mix of solid speed and decent power but just didnt have the competition but still gets considered by alot as a top 5 MW all time. I know some people dont but a win like over Mike would really solidfy himself as a top MW ever.

I think itd be a barnburner and end up as a close decision win for either but id lean towards Hopkins because he always finds a way to stay in fights even if against an unfavorable match up and always finds a way to grind you out.

I thought about this alot and i say mccallum by a slight edge,,,

I dont think hopkins ever dealt with really good top level boxers,,,

just look at his loses: jones, taylor, calzaghe, dawson,, all pretty good boxers,,

There isnt alot of wins vs good boxers: johnson in 97, faded joppy 03, winky up in weight 07,,,,

hopkins is not as good when he cant set the pace,, the guys that beat him all have in common is that they never let hopkins set the pace,, I think mccallum can do the same to hopkins and win a very slim close split decision

this fight would look alot like the fantastic fights between toney and mccallum
