  • Any ATG's or decent HOF's who had a late start to boxing?

We seem to be getting a lot of late starters (18+) in boxing these days, especially in the HW division.

Was wondering if there are any fighters who carved themselves a great career after starting late in their lives?

Not being clued up on boxing history the best I can think of is Sergio Martinez

Rigo didn't turn pro until 29
        Norton and Marciano at 24

Martinez is my favorite example too.

It's important to note that every successful boxer who starts late in life also has an extensive athletic background. Sergio played soccer, Rocky baseball, Ken football, and of course Rigo's ridiculous amateur feats. It's never an average Joe who just decided to lace up one day.

If starting late means turning Pro late, then Laszlo Papp is on the list. A HOFer that turned Pro at 30.

Not HOFor ATG but a very good fighter is Sven Ottke who turned Pro at 29.

I don't think he counts lol. It's not like he just began boxing at 29, he had been around boxing pretty much his whole career. Going by your logic GGG and anyone who comes out of amateur boxing is a late starter.

Pertaining to the thread, I don't know if any of you think Ray Mercer is HOF worthy but he had a late start, same with Earnie Shavers. Last guy I can think of is Larry Holmes

Shavers was in his 20's when he started, yes.

I think Norton was a late starter, in his 20's aswell.

Late starters (At the top level) tend to go on longer Eg. Hopkins as opposed to early starters E.g Benitez who tend to burn out quickly.

                Of course there's exceptions.

B-Hop, Tarver, Shavers, Marciano I believe

Adonis Stevenson started very late, 24 I believe when he first stepped in a gym & didn't turn pro until 29.
That Dyah Davis who fought DeFail at the weekend didn't start until he was 23.
