Good question. Another question that should also be asked of any boxer is how do they rank among those of their own era?

I do rate them "out of" the greatest boxers ever, far out!!!!
If your adding them into "all boxers" away from the heavyweight division they drift farther and farther away!
For example if you take the top ten all time in each division the Klitz bros are outside that group. Then figure theres more in each division than just ten!

These boys are good heavyweight fighters who try hard and get in good shape to fight. They benefit from a weak era and also have alot of injuries aren't very active in recent years. They've done very well for themselves and conduct themselves as gentleman should. They aren't great boxers, breakdown their skill set from each punch, combinations, movement (both off. & def.) peiring, slipping, ability to take power (recover) finishing techniques, ring generalship, opponents quality!!!! Then you can honestly decide where the Bros. place in history. Keep them in their division, in the overall populous they'll be lost!!! Ray.

Wladimir probably has an argument for being placed amongst the best 20-30hw ever or so already.

His record (59-3) is impressive, and the decision to not fight his brother doesn't really affect his legacy in my opinion. The "he is not the undisputed champion " argument is ludicrous if you ask me. He dominated his era.

Personally though, I would not place him higher than 20th. The level of competition is just too low, one can't get so much credit for beating up the likes of Wach and Mormeck, nor for getting K.O'ed by fighters like Brewster or Sanders, without even rematching the later.

As for Vitali, I don't rank him as an hw ATG, very good fighter, but didn't do enough. As simple as that.

Wladimir is obviously the higher ranked of the two, first off.

The problem I have with placing him higher than top 15-20 is

              1) He only avenged 1 defeat.
              2) His level of competition compared to other greats is very very low.

When looking at the greats through any era, most of, if not all of them have beaten the odds one way or another. Say Foreman - Frazier I, Ali vs Liston/Foreman etc etc. They have taken the mantle by beating another reigning champ. This doesn't apply to all fighters, but most of the greatest.

The question is: When has Wladimir overcome the odds? When has he surprised anyone? He's pretty much done what people expected of him against very moderate competition. His best wins are: Ibragimov, Chagaev & Haye IMO. These 3 fighters don't warrant a place amongst the greatest of all times.

I'm pretty sure he said "imagine he retired today".

If/when he becomes undisputed champ with another couple of wins against some of the current challengers from the new era - he could cement his place in the top 15 if not 10 ten.

Agreed about him not being undisputed champ. Besides, Vitali is older and will probably retire first. He's not even that active now. So when he retires, Wlad will probably win his WBC belt anyway from a top contender hopefully. I'd like to see that so that he could be undisputed.
